Disclaimer - I've been a 420 (pot) aficionado since college. :o

I've never taken it, but I've been interested in ecstacy, and Peter Jennings's upcoming report will be very enlightening. In the meantime, can anyone here share any personal experiences? What puzzles me is, Jennings says that "X" reduces the serotonin level in the brain. I'd think it would be just the opposite. What's the story?

I don’t know squat about brain chemistry, but I do know my way around recreational drugs…urrr…allegedly that is.

It’s no accident that X is so popular on the party circuit. It’s big fun. A mild hallucinogenic effect but nothing as intense as acid. Just an enhanced appreciation for pretty lights and increased ability to feel music instead of just hear it. An overall heightening of sensitivity that results in the touchy-feely stuff you see on dance floors.

What I like is the amp and euphoria. You just have energy and feel like everything is well in the world. I am not a naturally energetic person so I have always been fond of drugs that give me a boost. It’s just a mild amp – not the full wire you get from meth.

A few years ago, Derek and I went to the Black Party for the first time. We were scratching our heads, trying to figure out why all of these usually-cunty guys from our 'hood were suddenly smiley and friendly and chatty (and, yes, touchy-feely-kissy-licky). Then a friend told us that they were all on 'x' and it all made sense. I call it the "cuntiness antidote." :p

I took it a handful of times when I was in college... it wasn't called XTC then, we called it MDM or MDA, according to it's chemical make-up.

Yes, it is euphoric for most. It makes everything seem just a bit more alive and lovely. Or, a bit more worrisome and scary for a few of my friends back then.

But it also seems to be something that the body readily becomes immune to. I took it three times over a period of two years, the same dosage each time, and I can tell you that the effects were diminished each time. I recently knew an 18 year-old, (not carnally) who took it way too much. He was a bit fried in his day-to-day, but not only because of the X.

He told me about a party he went to, where he had to take 10 hits just to get off.

(He then had his first homosexual experience, but that's another story). At that point, I'm quite sure he'd been doing some permanent damage to his brain.

In short, doing it once or twice is fun. Make sure you get it from a clean, reliable source. Don't make a habit out of it, just enjoy it for what it is, then let it go.

Thanks for the responses so far, but can anyone shed light on this serotonin issue? :o

I believe what you heard was that with CONTINUED use of X, serotonin levels are decreased. Initially though, the tap is opened up releasing more serotonin than the brain would normally, therefore you have the euphoric feelings. It takes more and more to get the same effect, if you ever do again, and you crash harder and feel depressed afterwards. X is best when used infrequently.

what was said in the show is pretty much that the current youth using E are acting as ginuea pigs as it were. As was agreed when I spoke on the phone to a friend about the show, its almost seems as though Peter Jennings had taken it.

One of the ways to combat possible serotonin problems after taking E in the next few days is by taking St John's Wort. It was given to me after my first time and I have had no ill effects.

Answers... moderation moderation moderation....

E, x, xtc, ecstasy, whatever you want to call it.. works basically the same way that most modern anti depressants work, though in a much larger way, targeting the serotonin levels in the brain.

You get a huge serotonin boost, which then brings up the dopamine and norepremine levels, basically giving all the happy centers of your brain a huge kick in the ass.

Ecstasy is MDMA... Not to be confused with MDA, although very close in chemical makeup, very different in the way the body utilizes them.

It is rare that any ecstasy you find will actually be pure MDMA, likely it will be a mix of crystal, ketamine, possibly viagra, sometimes heroin, and mdma... yes, you never know exactly what is in those pills, and despite what people may tell you... press tabs (like an aspirin) are not a safer bet over capsules... likely, the press tabs will have less of the proper drug and more filler...

You asked about Ectasy use and a depletion in serotonin.. what happens when you take E, the part of your brain that produces serotonin, is triggered chemically, in effect tricking it to produce an over abundance of the pleasure chemicals in the brain, you feel euphoric, happy, like everything is perfect in the world, but when the drug starts to wear off.. your brain after being tricked into releasing too much seratonin, figures it can get by with producing less than normal... so you crash... usually two or three days after you take it. Usually in a day or two things balances out... T

In theory, long term usage can permanently alter the natural chemical balance, and signs of depression begin to appear..in theory...

There are lot's of 'theories' about every drug deemed illegal... usually a worst case senario, in order to scare people into not using... remember how marijuana was deemed a 'gateway drug', by the Just say No campain in the 80'w... Smoking pot would lead to harder and harder drugs, until eventually, your lying in a gutter with a needle in your arm... : )

Most recreational drugs, if taken in moderation, and with a bit of knowledge of what your taking, can be relatively safe.
