At sunset on Sunday (13 September) millions of Jews will be observing Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and the first of the High Holy Days. The two-day celebration, which begins on the first day of Tishrei is marked with a number of traditions, but food is one of the main customs that has lasted to the modern day.

Gut yauntif (i.e. happy holy days) to any fellow Jews out here.

Just to illustrate how odd my life is - I'm a professional musician (mostly theatre-related work), and one of my long-standing gigs is playing for a local church. And, it's a black catholic parish, so I'm the white Jew playing black church, lol. Myself, I grew up in a reform household (although my brother and I went to an orthodox hebrew school and synagogue, to honor what my father's relatives would want), and do go to high holiday services when I can, but I've always let my work take precedence.

So there I am this morning, preparing for the mass, and the music director mentions Rosh Hashana, and I said yes, it starts tonight. He asked if I was going to temple, and my somewhat ironic response - "I can't...I have rehearsal." :p

But, I'll be there in spirit. Happy new year, all.
