I saw the London "Manon Lescaut" a while ago in a movie theater. Interesting, even strange, staging at the end. The first opera I saw with Jonas was "Manon" about seven years ago. I bought those tickets more for Natalie Dessay.

That's the Covent Garden Royal Opera House staging where the final scene appears to take place on an incomplete freeway overpass (literally, the end of the road!) which appears to have been moved from the barren wastes/desert outside of New Orleans to the American Southwest with billboards showing cactus and other desert scenes. That production was updated to the late 1950's or early 1960's and seemed to work pretty well (stage-wise) for the first two acts but fell apart in the 3rd act when instead of boarding a ship bound for the American penal colonies, they traveled through a billboard at La Havre and ended up at the "end of the road" in the American Southwest! WHA...??!!! o_O:eek:

I remember now. As usual I remember operas seen in person more than operas in a movie theater. But, it enjoyed many other aspects of the Covent Garden production.

I recall discussing that Covent Garden Manon Lescaut here and made a comment that I had expected to see a Popeyee's "Louisiana Fast" Restaurant as part of the staging. Well there wasn't one. Too bad as it might just have saved poor Manon's life! However, come to think of it all that grease, cholesterol, and deep fried fast food might have killed her off even sooner!

Incidentally neither the CG nor Munich production had any "trine morbide" (soft lace). That made somewhat of a travesty of Manon's big aria "In quelle trine morbide"!

My favorite rendition: Callas Puccini 1954

I wonder if the OP is following this thread. If so now he knows why one can not spell NUTS with out a U in it!

I first heard both Renata Tebaldi and the opera itself on a Metropolitan Opera broadcast of Manon Lescaut when I was a teenager back in ancient times:

I believe there was a great deal of "trine morbide" in that MET production!
