There is an excellent and interesting piece is today's New York Times - http://www.nytimes.com/2004/03/15/business/media/15papers.html

It is a reprint from the International Herald Tribune, about the sale in Italy of poetry and fiction. A Rome daily newspaper sold millions of copies of books, as do other Italian daily newspapers, at vendors and newsstands throughout the nation. These books include poetry and well known and proven fiction titles by reputable authors.

Who wants to take bets that the daily newspapers of the great cities of this country could convince their non-subscription readers to purchase great literature from the likes of, oh, for arguments sakes, say John Grisham or Stephen King?
