My current computer is a P4 1.6g 256 ram running windows XP home and have a nice sound card. I am looking to upgrade or buy a new computer and not sure which is the best and most economical way to go. I would like to have a P4 2.8g or higher with 512 ram.

I don't play a lot of games, mostly use the computer for light home office stuff, listen to and download a lot of music, and plenty of Internet surfing. In the near future (3-6 months) I also would like to get into digital photography.

What would you suggest, buy or upgrade?

Hey 10 I could be wrong but if you upgrade you will need a new motherboard to be at 2.8. Ram is cheap so that shouldn't be a problem. If you are paying someone to upgrade for you my guess is it will cost you about $350. in a major city like Los Angeles (where I am).

Personally I like the ugrade option right now. I think in the next two years we will see a huge leap in technology for personal computers. If that is the case a upgrade would get you through this time period nicely.

To spend money on buying new now doesn't seem to make alot of sense even with prices being so low.

Good luck.

Why do you want to upgrade at this point?

If you only use it for light office work, listening to music and surfing the Web, it would seem as if the machine you have would be powerful enough to handle what you are throwing at it. And certainly digital photography isn't going to require much in resources, except likely some disk space to hold image files.

So is there a particular reason you're unhappy with your current system? If so, perhaps we can better advise you.

Hello 10cc

You don't need to buy a new one, just add more ram (they are really cheap right now 256 won't cost you more that $50) 1.6g and 2.8g won't make that much difference. Don't wast the money, wait for the new "real" 64bit P4 come out next year. :)

Yeah you all are right. I really don't need to upgrade. I am going to add mroe ram and should be in a pretty good spot for at least another year. I am not doing anything too intense on the computer yet. I guess I had ghz envy, might be a little like penis envy :)

I agree. The two things you can do to get the most out of relatively current computers is max out the RAM and the disk space.

(You can never have too much of either.)

A lot of digital music and/or photos will EAT disk space. And the programs that use them do most of their work in RAM. The more, the better.

Processors these days are almost immaterial. The difference between 1.6 and 2.anything just won't be noticeable given "enough" RAM and disk space.

I was about to laugh at you guys when you said there isnt much difference between 1.6 and 2.8. I am sorry, there is a HUGE difference. But then again, i am an INTENSE gamer, and for me that would laughable.

But in his case, the amount of $$ it would cost to get to the 2.8/3.0 wouldnt be worth it for the apps he wants to run.

And to repeat what the other said, mem and ram is the most important for what you want to do.

And if you plan on using and photo editing software(I.E PhotoShop ect.) you will want to get at LEAST a gig of ram, and 2 wouldnt hurt.

Oh and heres a good idea. Look into getting a external USB HD that will allow you to take all your IMPORTANT images with you. The benefit of the external is the portability. And also every computer these days has USB, so you dont have to worry about compatibility.

Darlin', when this thread was current (two years ago) the advice here was sound. And honestly, it still is given the requirements as stated. ;-)
