Blind Or Deaf?

Deaf (of which I'm halfway there anyway) over blind. Even at my age I have near perfect vision--of far away things but still can't read a menu without the readers on.

Not to be too flip, but I find that partial hearing loss is helping my concentration. That is to say, now when I put in the hearing aids, I wonder how on earth people can think with all that racket.

The world seems to be getting louder. Many students play music so loudly in their earbuds I can hear it coming from the hallway...when I'm inside my never-silent classroom. They'll all be going deaf soon.

In a similar vein -- the upside of misfortune -- my father seemed to enjoy his diminished hearing. For the last few years of his life, his preference seemed to be to sit in his chair and do absolutely nothing. The hearing loss helped him to ignore the agenda my then-still-active mother (six years his senior) was forever trying to foist upon him.

 

When he failed to do something she asked (daily) and she'd point that out, he'd look at her incredulously and say, "Well, I didn't hear you, Dear. Speak up!"

 

And now -- as the world turns -- I am forever talking LOUDLY to her and I am frequently reprimanded for it -- "You don't have to shout at me!"

I agree, the world does seem to be getting louder. Some time ago I stopped going to movie theaters because of the excessive volume of he sound systems. And, maybe it's just me, but it seem to me that television commercials are getting loud again.

Commercials are getting louder. My parents have their TV connected to external stereo speakers. The volume will suddenly increase when a commercial comes on.
