I saw this show last week. This incident was probablly an improvement. (Though Michael Urie is wonderful! He could read the phone book and I'd love him.)

It's not just actors who have this problem, almost everyone does. My own solution is to ignore it. I was teaching when the OJ verdict was announced, that experience has done wonders to accept anything.

"Gypsy" was written for Ethel Merman. She played the role for over two and a half years on Broadway and the road. Mama Rose fit Merman's personality since she was known to correct audiences long before cell phones. People say that Merman went out into the audience herself.

 

I saw Merman twice as Mama Rose on Broadway and in Boston. This video is twenty year after Broadway so Ethel Merman is considerably older than when she played the role.

The news tonight tied this to another recent occurrence where someone leapt onto the set just before a show was about to begin and plugged his phone into a fake prop outlet. There is no end.
