Arrgh.

If you go to my website (www. LaterSlater.com), about half the time it shows up. The other half the time you get a "999 error". Not to worry, if you get the error, you can roll the dice again, refresh, and there's another 50% shot it'll show up. Heck, hit refresh five or six times, you're virtually certain to get my page.

I called Yahoo and the very friendly Indian guy tells me he cannot replicate the problem. (I say this is the day for him to buy a lottery ticket.) He then directs me to a FAQ page about error 999, which basically tells the end user to scan for viruses, don't share WiFi, and the like.

This happens with me across browsers and devices, and to my friends who I asked to test as well. It's not an end-user issue. Yahoo says it is, or that it's temporary.

Thoughts? I've been thinking of migrating over to GoDaddy, might that solve the issue? I'm told that at the very least their phone rep will speak with an unhelpful but American accent.

Migrate to https://www.inmotionhosting.com/

Their customer phone support is (1) located in the U.S., (2) unfailingly responsive, (3) extremely knowledgeable and accurate in their solutions to problems.

In fact they've even helped me fix Microsoft problems that Microsoft's own live support could not handle. E.g., a recent Outlook update contained a bug that the Microsoft support rep refused to acknowledge, even after the InMotion rep pointed it out to me, and fixed by resetting some of my mail host settings.

InMotion support staff have also helped me with questions about WordPress configuration (running WordPress software on my site, not the WordPress site), which WordPress plug-ins are best for this or that, etc. InMotion goes far beyond and above.

Curious...I'm having problems updating to the newest version of FireFox. Could they help with something like that? It's not an issue yet, but it potentially could be a real irritant if I don't resolve the issue fairly soon.

Not sure. That would seem to be an issue purely confined to your local computer. Whereas I've only ever gone to them with questions about problems where the hosting service that I buy from them was involved one way or another. Like: my Outlook problem was that, after Microsoft auto-updated my desktop Outlook email software, my Outlook stopped communicating with my mail host which is part of the web-site-and-email-hosting service that I buy from InMotion.

But why not call them from the 800 # on their web site which I linked above, and see what they say.

(I don't think they provide tech support services if you're not a client of their hosting services.)

The internet equivalent of "reboot your PC".

You should definitely migrate from Yahoo. It appears that the 999 error is unique to them, so if you move, you will at a minimum start getting different and possibly more useful error messages, and maybe no errors at all.

I wouldn't go with GoDaddy, but unfortunately I don't know which other web hosts allow adult content. Your choice will also depend on what kinds of services you need - do you have static pages? PHP? IIS? Back-end database?

Thanks will do...

It's too bad not more of my clients come from India, because apparently my site is working great over there...

Ya never know. A big-dicked white guy might do well there. ROAD TRIP! :p

Two things about GoDaddy: 1) I hate them, 2) they're headquartered in Arizona and I'm still pissed off over various dipshit legislation passed there.

(I do have one website at GoDaddy, but mostly because I manage it for someone else and haven't had the energy to move it yet. I moved everything else I had there elsewhere several years ago.)

Just remember the rule about hosting: every doggone one of them will piss you off sooner or later. o_O

If you want to know adult friendly providers ... here's a few:

http://www.cheap-domainregistration.com/

http://www.mydomain.com/

http://www.webhostingpad.com/

http://www.iqweb.ca/

http://www.newmediacanada.com/

http://www.domainnameregistrations.ca/

They may offer domain registration only, web hosting only, or both. You may want to double check if they are still okay with adult content, as these things can change.

I hope this helps.

Cheers, Anton.

Thanks for the suggestions, Anton and Adam Smith. The site is now migrated. Please do let me know if y'all have any issues with it. :)

P.S. For Kevin, people I know who use GoDaddy report that its tech support sucks shit in every possible way.

Just wanted to follow up on this. Despite warnings here, I did use godaddy, mostly because the fellow helping me build my website was most comfortable with them and I think these things work better with one chief rather than me second guessing him.

I couldn't be more pleased with godaddy and its support. I can call 24/7, promptly speak with someone stateside (in native english!) and, despite my tenancy to ask really dumb and/or complex questions, resolve whatever issue in a single call. All this for the whopping $50 a year they get from me.

So at least one vote for them.

Good to know! Maybe they listened to all the complaining and fixed themselves.
