What a reasonable, realistic & sympathetic article about escorting.

If the press is beginning to shed its reflex toward negative narratives about sex work, maybe there's hope for society at large, especially with generational change as has worked in favor of other issues.

I remember reading this article before, possibly when it was first published. I would have thought I saw it here, but I guess not. I'm glad they spoke to academics who have studied the subject; I'm a little uncomfortable with the Rentboy angle because it's pretty obvious they made people available for promotional purposes, and in return the writer didn't dig any deeper. While it seems clear to me that the most professional and successful escorts are not irresponsible dope fiends, that doesn't mean Rentboy and its equivalents are free of them or that only escorts who aren't worth bothering about use the more informal means of finding clients.

The Economist ran a sympathetic piece not long ago, and the Lancet advocated decriminalization. But given the continued peculiarities of American attitudes toward sex, the existence of underage trafficking, and the great divide between male and female escorts as far as trafficking and motivation are concerned, I'm not sure this will ever be solved here.

Since even at its highest levels, female escorting is all about satisfying male clients and stroking their egos, it doesn't have the potential for the more mutual footing of male escorting, where both party's genuine pleasure is important. It will continue to be practiced more for money than the escort's sexual pleasure and to be viewed as a threat to women and to marriage. And it contains what I suspect are demonstrably higher rates of trafficking, which is only to be expected when men are raised to think women owe them sex.

It sure would be nice to have some actual data, as well as more data on male escorting, but the law enforcement environment and difficulty of finding funding sources make that unlikely. It would be time-consuming and difficult to create a basis for decriminalizing male escorting and not female escorting (major constitutional issues there), and decriminalizing both isn't going to happen. Sorry to be such a downer, but until we break through our hangups over sex, sexuality, gender, and morality, I don't see a basis for improvement.

I recall reading the article here and bingo it was indeed posted back in March of 2014 by SD:

While it all seems a bit disconcerting given Boomer's appearance and reputation, it certainly confirms that people's interests and skills know no bounds and that we should not jump to conclusions about any individual based on stereotypical superficialities. Plus, it confirms that working guys do indeed have quite diversified backgrounds and ultimately have the same aspirations and ambitions as the rest of us. Indeed I have been fortunate in that the majority of working guys that I have met have not only been well educated, but certainly have had a variety of interests as well. I realize that is not always the case, but that has been my personal experience.

It is an interesting article, and I must agree with WG in his post above. All of the guys I have met have been well educated, with a variety of interests and some long term goals for their lives. I guess I may have been spoiled to have had such good times with some remarkable men.
