Two San Francisco Superior Court judges declined today to order the city to stop issuing gender-neutral marriage licenses.

One judge continued the case until Friday, but said he might not rule then, depending on what happens in the other case. In the second case, the judge argued for a while about the position of a semicolon :) and then issued a non-binding "cease and desist" order to the city. He told the city to return to court at the end of March to explain its legal position.

Viewed from the East Coast, both judges seemed to be looking for ways to avoid stopping the marriages, at least for now. I'd love to know how our Californal legal minds here see this.

So for now, the marriages roll on... incredibly, unbelievably, so.

Neither wants be the bad guy on their home turf. (Can you imagine the lynch mobs?)

Giving the city until the end of March to justify its actions is fairly brilliant. By then, THOUSANDS of real people will be affected. Instead of being an abstract concept, represented by media bytes from Gay Pride parades, there will be thousands of images of real people beaming with joy.

It's one thing to vote against an abstract concept that doesn't involve "real people", but quite another when you've got real images and all of them joyful.

In a way, it's almost Dilbert-esque. ;-) Got a tough problem? Do nothing, the situation will change and you won't have to deal with it. :+
