England could host World Cup in 2022 if Qatar is stripped of it over FIFA corruption scandal, says culture secretary

England is ready to host the 2022 World Cup if it is stripped from Qatar in the wake of allegations of corruption and bribery in FIFA, culture secretary John Whittingdale has said.

Mr Whittingdale said the country has the facilities and mounted an impressive, if unsuccessful, bid to host the 2018 World Cup, and so could host the 2022 event if asked by FIFA.

He spoke as MPs asked whether England could step in to host the World Cup if allegations that the bid process for the Qatar tournament was corrupt are found to be true.

Is it too late to disqualify Russia in 2018?

it's too late... but any European country could held them: Germany, Spain, France, Italy, etc all of them have already large soccer stadiums in their large cities.

Let's do it and punish Putin... actually let him spend more money just like in Sochi, that would be a proper way to punish him.

England, the US and Australia each put up creditable bids for World Cup 2022 and lost out to the FIFA self-licking icecream. Any of them could still run the tournament, although Australia does not have the number of 40,000 seat stadiums that FIFA specify (not that I am convinced that matters). Australia successfully ran the Asian Cup earlier this year.

To me Qatar hosting the Cup is problematic not only for the way the bid was won but also because of the horrendous slave labour conditions that underpin the construction process. I would add gay rights, or lack thereof as a factor, but sadly that isn't as mainstream a concern as it is in the West.

I think yinz are ready to go and host it but you might need to enlarge a few stadiums unless you Sydney and Melbourne are willing to host 2 groups at the same time.

8 large stadiums are required for the 1st phase of the competition.

UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, etc and other countries already have them in their main cities.

Australia has my vote! No need to bribe me!

What are the chances that western Europe and the Americas pull out of FIFA? Would anything less than that force FIFA to reform?

Yep, that would be an issue, and a number of the grounds are ovals rather than rectangular grounds. I don't know what our plan was when the bid was made. For the Asian Cup a number of the 25k+ grounds were used. With two 40k+ grounds Sydney and Melbourne could host two groups (and mix up the two groups across the two grounds). The Brisbane Cricket Ground and Subiaco Oval in Perth can both seat 40k as well. Canberra has plans for a larger stadium in the centre of the city but it's not clear when it will be built.
