Fliers will have to book flights through Cuba Travel Services, a company that organizes charter flights to Cuba, rather than JetBlue. But Americans are still not authorized to travel to Cuba as tourists and must instead visit for one of 12 specific purposes like visiting a close relative or participating in an academic program.

Gentlemen, I am looking for advice to back channel into Cuba. Not falling into one of the authorized categories, can you use a travel agent in Toronto (for example) to get a plane ticket and Cuban visa / travel card? I would hate to travel all the way to Canada or or other county, and then find no flights or other such difficulties.

Travel is planned for this late Fall, I have locals that have accomadations secured for me, as well as transportation from Jose Marti Airport.

I think a lot of people fly from Canada or Mexico; Cuban immigration will not stamp your passport; you will continue to be in violation of U.S. laws but my understanding is that prosecution is a low priority with U.S. Treasury; if I remember correctly, the Lonely Planet guide has more information, and a search on the Internet should give you tips on the best way for Americans to travel there when they are not in an authorized category.

I agree you might wait a bit and see what develops. Things are moving quickly.

I arranged everything on the phone with a travel agent in Montreal. (A bonus: you get to play with the Montreal boys on both ends of your trip!)

how does an American with valid US Passport get there? Would like to see it before it is 'too opened up', and would like to travel independently.

Any advice appreciated, gentlemen.

For what it's worth, I offer you these websites to consult: http://www.visitcuba.com, https://cubatodo.com, and http://www.cubaabsolutely.com. Hope these work!

I have lots of sources which I used prior and during my People-to-People travel which I took in March of 2015, even some gay-related sources. If you're interested, send me a pvt., and instead of my responding singularly to you, I'll post everything at this site for you and for others.

I had a super-wonderful trip (even on this People-to-People) week's trip. There were fourteen of us who booked legitimately from a Canadian company which specializes in travel for us Americans. Fortunately, we had a guide who allowed us some time to do as we pleased, but she did expect us to participate in the majority of the offerings per our itinerary. The only restrictions that I felt, overall, was the US's. Most People-to-People tours do not go beyond 12 or 14 days.

Check out: http://www.cuba-junky.com/havana/casa-aleido.htm, ...the same site without all that comes after .com. Also note the outstanding monthly blog: http:www.cubaabsolutely.com. Both are superb references.

LASTLY, it's goin' to be a while before we US citizens will be able to travel freely; the travel infrastructure is not ready to accommodate the "flood" of Americans who desire to go to this largest of island nations in the Caribbean. The airport alone can't accommodate all of those jets; presently there's a shortage of hotel rooms {Although I was on a P-to-P program and had no problem. But if you desire to go before the embargo and travel restrictions have been lifted and travel on your own via Canada or Cancun or Mexico City, etc., I wish you the best and tacitly support you.}

sooo.. you want to go to Cuba before it gets to bourgeois, and before the escorts jack up the rates due to the influx of fresh American dollars?

I think there is another Cuban traveler on here that could give you lots of information. Alas I don't remember his name.
