Twists your heart every direction At Swim, Two Boys took. But unlike Jamie ONeill's monumental gay tragedy, Proulx's down-home story requires 45 minutes, not days, to finish. Yet I suspect the emotional after-splash will ripple equally as long.

Try amazon.co.uk if you can't find it in the US; it's worth the expense and hassle. And if you live in Wyoming, cry silently, lest you get tire-ironed.

Rod,

Just to clarify where you can find this monumentally heart-breaking story, it is contained in Annie Proulx"s collection "Close Range: Wyoming Stories" and should be easily available at Amazon. Thanks for bringing it to the attention of this group.

Incidently, the "tire iron" incident you mention doesn't happen in Wyoming....it's in Texas (natch). No, we here in the Cowboy State prefer to tie our gays to buck fences and pistol whip them.....but at least give us credit for being one of the few states which hasn't yet enacted a "Defense of Marriage" law.

Goddamn it! I paid like 9 dollars, plus international shipping, for this fucking stupid book, and you're telling me I could have picked it up in a collection at some local store? Fuckin Hell.

Sorry, but there was mention of a tire ironing (Earl and Rich) that DID take place in (fictional) Wyoming.

Hey Rick,

Loved that story. Read it when I heard that Ang Lee had signed to film it. Heard last week that Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall had been signed to play the leads. Let's hope that they leave in all the passion and love and ok, hot ranch hand sex between these men. Time will tell............
