Old Vadim Makaroff once made remark that his sister, the Countess Kapnist, who presided over a celebrated salon at St. Petersburg in the days of the last Tsar, had cultivated social reform as a remedy to her tedium, the end being that one day she awoke to find that reform had become revolt, revolt, revolution, and, dispossessed of position and property, she had become an impoverished emigre living in a barn on the outskirts of Paris. Perhaps the best long term investment is not in stocks and bonds, but, ample stores of canned goods, carbine rifles and ammunition. . .

Or perhaps we could invest in education, jobs, building dialogue, and perhaps an inclusion instead of exclusion mentality for starters..... But yes, failing that, by all means, grab a 30-30 and some Del Monte.

Yes! Bismarck did it to prevent a communist revolution which unfortunately happened and (among other things) caused the defeat of Germany in WW1.

Old Age and Disability Insurance Law of 1889

"The Old Age Pension program, an insurance equally financed by employers and workers, was designed to provide a pension annuity for workers who reached age 70 years. Unlike the Accident Insurance and Sickness Insurance programs, this program covered all categories of workers—industrial, agrarian, artisans and servants from the start. Also, unlike the other two programs, the principle that the national government should contribute a portion of the underwriting cost, with the other two portions prorated accordingly, was accepted without question. The Disability Insurance program was intended to be used by those permanently disabled. This time, the State or Province supervised the programs directly"

Healthcare and universal right to vote to all men over the age of 18 were also very popular in Germany, 100% of German soldiers had the right to vote, while only 15% of British had the right to do it. He was also anti-pole and anti-Catholic, but he was pragmatic.

I like the idea of investing "in education, jobs, building dialogue, and perhaps an inclusion instead of exclusion mentality;" when I saw the gold carriages in the Hermitage, I thought to myself "No wonder the revolution, you fools; you needed to share more." There is no reason why in a wealthy country like ours these things should be happening; there is enough for everyone.

Not only that... but the Czar was an absolutist monarch, he had the power to do whatever he wanted without dealing with filibuster, veto proof majority, commercial interested, lobbyist, etc... he could have been an illustrated despot just like Charles III in Spain and choose building hospitals and sewage for big cities instead of unnecessary things like he did first as king of Parma, Naples and finally Spain.

He could have done so much to help his own people and he didn't.

One thing is something bad happening to you, other thing is asking for trouble and getting what you deserved.

I am surprised we have not had more civil unrest than we have seen; I thought the Occupy Wall Street movement would be a start, but I was disappointed that it fizzled out; hopefully it has bolstered the income inequality issue, which will loom large in the 2016 elections;
