4 British sailors charged with sexual assault of Canadian civilian

Four members of Britain's Royal Navy have been accused of gang raping a woman at CFB Shearwater in Nova Scotia.

Speaking outside provincial court Friday, Crown attorney Scott Morrison said the sailors are alleged to have participated in a "group sexual assault" against the civilian woman in the barracks at the Halifax-area military base late on the evening of April 9 or early April 10.

He said the men, who were in Nova Scotia participating in a hockey tournament with local Armed Forces personnel, were arrested Thursday morning.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS) charged each man with one count of sexual assault causing bodily harm and one count of sexual assault committed with one or more other persons. The accused are:

  • Craig Stoner, 24, of Stonehouse.
  • Darren Smalley, 35, of Gosport.
  • Joshua Finbow, 23, of Stockbridge.
  • Simon Radford, 31, of Lower Gosport

I think it's interesting how there doesn't appear to be shame when they commit the act of rape, but once caught, it suddenly becomes a shameful act, and they hide their heads.

They shouldn't be allowed to do that and a uniform shouldn't be an entitlement to commit such a nasty act and get away with it.

In this world someone who spends just a few days for rape you have be really guilty.

If a woman shows up and says her car was stolen we would believe her right away, why when a woman says she's been raped she has to prove she isn't crazy?

I hope the Canadian justice system works better and they're not judge by their friends and peers but by an independent judge like it happens in Israel and other countries who have to deal with this issue.

Let's hope they aren't innocent (could be one reason they don't want their faces shown) because their names are not just published in the newspaper but men are repeating them on sites like this one! For perhaps decades, even if found innocent, search engines will report their arrests for future girlfriends, employers and others to see and make their own judgment about. A bell can't be unrung. If those who think this treatment is just fine, remember your views if you're ever arrested for your hobby because you can face the same publication of your details and what you've been accused of - and if you're found innocent don't expect any publication of that.

Not specific to this case, those who are wrongfully arrested/accused/etc, should be able to recover enormous amounts of money if find to be innocent and there shouldn't be exemptions for cops or prosecutors. Alternatively, like I believe the process is in France, names aren't released (and no perp walks) unless/until someone is convicted. Do stores sell empathy others can buy even a small supply of?

Sooner or later the "right to be forgotten" will become reality: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_to_be_forgotten

If this had happen in the states, her name might be out but their name would be more difficult to know. It happened in Canada and that's why their names are known, maybe so other women might come out saying they were raped too.

1% or 2% of rapes are based on lies. The UVA rape scandal or Duke University for example.

I know, prostitution/solicitations is illegal but I'd rather explaining to my nephew that I had to pay for sex and I got caught by the cops, instead of saying I was wrongly accused of rape by a girl who made up the whole thing and hurt her vagina with a comb or getting fucked rough by a friend, to make it look like my 3 friends and I raped her. (that was the Kobe Bryant defense, she asked a friend to fuck her hard so her vagina would have a scar) obviously she did it for the money, I don't think you can say that in this scenario.

Besides, you don't even mentioned the trauma a woman goes when she's raped, isn't she the real victim?

Don't worry, if they were blacks, all blacks would be asked questions about why they rape so much and considered would be rapist by birth, but they're British nothing bad or criminal sticks to their reputation. The Qantas Rolls Royce engines in the airbus where defective, can you imagine if they had been made in Spain, Italy, Mexico or Brazil countries who have excellent manufacturing records?

I agree with you on this, but how likely is a man to go to jail for rape, besides "enormous amount of money", have his name clear, back to his job and some money.

Despite popular belief the French are big on privacy laws and a judge can't make a different interpretation about it, I think we should copy their system.

At the end of the day when a cop or soldier/sailor misbehaves, we taxpayers pick up the bill.

I hope you feel this way about all crime and not just rape. After all, innocent until proven guilty and all that jazz.

But it will never happen in the US unless the First and Sixth Amendments are repealed, which I would oppose, because otherwise how would we know about abuse of position, authority, and power such as that of former police official Burge in Chicago, whose officers tortured suspects (Russian roulette, the whole nine yards), various officers who have no problem shooting black men who turn out to be unarmed but merely arrest and put into custody a white man who shoots at people (happened just this week), or Bill Cosby's (alleged) depredations?
