According to the New York Times, there is "an emerging population of gay men who are not only raising children but are also committed to the idea that one parent should leave the workplace to do it. Of 9,328 same-sex couples with children whose census returns were randomly selected for analysis by the Census Bureau, 26 percent of the male couples included a stay-at-home parent, said Gary Gates, a demographer with the Urban Institute, a nonpartisan research organization in Washington. That figure is one percentage point more than for married couples with children and four percentage points higher than for female couples..."

Now, if Derek and I ever decide to have a kid, who gets to stay at home? Wait a minute...right now, we both do. OK, well, who stays home and who does out-calls? :+

The full, really neat-o story:

I agree, this is a really neat story. I read the story yesterday and printed out a copy for my Mom.

As I read the story the thought that hit me is how traditional gay and straight relationships are changing. During my lifetime I've seen the progress of the women's movement which has resulted in a number of families being led by two wage earners. This article talks about an increasing number of gay Dads are deciding that one person should stay home with the child. As the divorce rate for straight couples is increasing gays are making progress in the fight to get married.

The world is definately changing . . .
