SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge will close to traffic for 52 hours this weekend, the first extended shutdown since it opened 77 years ago.

During the closing, workers will install a movable barrier aimed at preventing head-on collisions on the bridge. But from early Saturday to 4 a.m. Monday, only construction vehicles and Golden Gate Transit buses will be allowed to use the bridge.

Drivers who normally travel across the mile-wide entrance to San Francisco Bay between the city and Marin County will have to take a roundabout route across the Bay Bridge to Oakland, through the East Bay and then across the bridge between Richmond and San Rafael.

If one considers a closure of (order of 7 or 8 hours) an extended shutdown, on the 50th anniversary of the bridge,

it was closed to vehicular traffic and so many people were on it that it slightly flattened out in the middle under the weight.

Don't have a photo handy . . .
