After the first part, I thought this part would end in death and sorrow, but since I never saw the play, I was unexectedly surprised to see it end on an upbeat note of survival, hope and defiance! Bravo! Congratulations to HBO on yet another top of the line presentation of the true potential of TV. Sure beats the shit out of Joe Millionaire! Why can't all of TV present such wonderful shows?

I was duly impressed with both the show and the cast. Everyone in the cast was wonderful. I can't believe anything will top this presentation/ensemble in the coming season and everyone involved in this show deserves an Emmy!

Unfortunately, there aren't enough Emmys to reward this show. Both Emma Thompson and Meryl Streep deserve an Emmy as best leading actress, but since only one can win the honor, I have to vote for Meryl, but only because she got the more varied roles of personalities. Is it uncalled for that she and Emma share the award?

Al Pacino as Roy Cohn, is a hands down favorite.

Supporting actor should definitely go to Jeffrey Wright! I was truly surprised and awed at his range of versatility!

Supporting actress should DEFINITELY go to Mary Louise Parker!!! I have loved her, every since I saw her in Fried Green Tomatoes. A very underappreciated actress, who is always great in every role she undertakes. IMO, my very, very favorite performance in this whole presentation! Wow, I really identified with her character, and I doubt any other actress out there could come close to her performance in this presentation. Hopefully she will get an Emmy as she deserves it after being cheated out of the Oscar for her performance in Fried Green Tomatoes! :)

If anyone missed either part, they'll show all six hours consecutively overnight on Saturday night January 3, but on the HBO-SIGNATURE channel. That's mostly available on satellite or digital cable. Gives you a couple of weeks to find someone who has it, and either invite yourself over or beg them to tape it for you.

Agree with the previous review ... absolutely magnificent writing, direction and acting. Don't miss it.

BTW, even though no DVD has been announced, Amazon is already soliciting names of customers interested in buying it. No price yet, of course.

A magnificent production for sure. Having had the good fortune of seeing the Broadway production, I didn't have high hopes for a "movie" version. Boy was I wrong! Mike Nichols did total justice to Kushner's text, and as has been said, the casting was impeccable. Al Pacino has never been better. Meryl Streep is gut wrenching in all her roles. (I loved how her Rabbi even had dandruff on his shoulders!) Justin Kirk is from both the Broadway and film version of Love Valor Compassion, and he gave Prior just the right amount of bravado and finesse. I agree about Mary Louise Parker, and her real life situation even adds to the pathos. Eight months pregnant, she was just dumped by her longtime boyfriend, Billy Crudup, for Claire Danes. She's an incredible actor and my love affair with her goes back to Longtime Companions in the very early 90's. Jeffrey Wright is the only one from the original theatrical cast to make the transfer. He was great then and he's even greater now. This film makes for some of the most terrifying and yet rewarding emotions in a long, long time.

>i was going to be out there just before the new year for a couple of >days, but my VERY BIG FAN hasn't gotten back to me. how long will >TiVo store it?

Indefinitely. I have both segments marked "keep until I delete". This may be the excuse I need to figure out how to copy from TiVo to DVD. One of those things that can be done that I've not yet mastered.

Keep me posted on your travel plans. Will do the same on DVD copying progress.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show. It was not what I expected when I saw the preview on HBO. But, I have a friend who told me the story. I didn't watch the last part at 8 PM as I on the road and then decided to watch it on HBO on Demand at 4am after a long trip from Montreal in the blizzard. Even after the trip, I just had to stay up till the wee hours of the morning to see the end of the show. Al Pacino was my hands down favorite. All of the actors did a great job but his portrayal I thought was deserving of an award.

Actually, I believe if there were to be a split decision both COULD be granted an Emmy. I don't recall if it's ever happened before with the Emmy, but, if memory serves, it did happen once at the Oscars about 20 or 30 years ago. Frankly, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if AiA swept the program. It was just awesome.

When ARE the Emmies, by the way?

Just my .02 worth, a week late. Have had this sitting on the TiVo for a few days now. Sat down on Saturday night while getting ready to go out. Was just going to watch the first 15 minutes or so. Well, I was three hours late meeting my friends, as I watched the entire first episode. Perhaps without even blinking.

Like VAHawk, I was a bit skeptical of this program. Not really sure why. But, this is a terrific program. I would echo everyone else's comments that this is a terrific program, well worth watching.

The writing is just brilliant. Quite a story.

I agree that Mary Louise Parker is always fascinating to watch. Anyone see her in "Proof" on Broadway? A brilliant performance for which she received a Tony. But... she lost the movie role to Gwynneth! Bummer! (I'm assuming, of course, that she wanted it... maybe she was too busy making babies with Billy.)
