I've been volunteering my time with Hook staff, to expand their offerings to guys who work in Washington, DC.

Are you an escort? Do you work for a porn company? Have some other professional affiliation in the adult entertainment business?

Join other men working in the sex industry for free bites and chat together about life, love and work.

Thursday, November 20th, 2014. 5 - 7pm.

Dupont Circle location.

The event is free. And food is provided!

just a thought as to why no response here. I personally have never liked the word, 'hooker" or 'hooking" and I certainly have never like the term "hookie" awards. I find the term demeaning and degrading. I have never hustled or hooked anyone as my clients have always sought me out. Those terms envision the dark old dim days of street hustling . Just my thoughts. I am all for a meeting but I would suggest a name change to draw more interest. MIKEY

ok....so I thought about this a bit and after receiving an invitation form rentboy for this event on the 20th I registered anyway as a show of support for others in the DC area. After a LONG twenty minute registration process and a successful completion of it including all the necessary numbers they STILL will not give out the location of the event. This is ridiculous. I think it is dick chenys' undisclosed secret location. I have made other plans. I actually followed up with them and was told, "it will be emailed out this week." I have received no such email. a client wants Thursday at 6pm so I chose the client instead.

the differences between a escort and a hooker are a mile wide. Hook, hookie, hooker. It's all the same derrogatory term

on the client viewpoint, I'd never see someone who refers to themselves as a hooker

Mikey I wouldn't have given up so fast. Sounds like an event where you could meet a lot of other escorts and perhaps do some networking and learn the ins and outs of the DC market. Did you try contacting Dave? Since you've already booked a client, then best to go with that, but food for thought in the future.

I am thinking of becoming an escort have been a competitive bodybuilder for years now and love sex. Would love to meet other escorts and ask their advice as to how to enter the industry.

Mikey the folks over at rentboy are VERY nice and have gotten to know them over the last year. They have been nothing but kind and supporting to escorts and while I agree that the terminology could use some work the workshops they put on a GREAT resource. If Hawk Kinkade is there go up and introduce yourself he is a really nice guy who escorted a few years ago and is a wealth of information.

I went to the Hook meet and greet at MAL this year and got to meet a ton of other sex workers. I have since gone to a few of there other events when I have traveled to New York and they are worth going to. Its always nice to meet other guys in the business and have someone to talk to, we all need a support system.

I agree but can see where Mikey is coming from. It is a group of people worth meeting and a resource that's good to know about.

yeah - as BigValBoy suggested, Mikey, you shouldve followed up with me. we are purposefully not sharing the location publicly, for privacy for escorts. if you don't understand the reasons for discretion in that regard, I don't know what to tell you.

but in fact, as you were told by Hook Online staff, it would be mailed out later in the week. I am also "registered" for the event, and just got the location sent to me in an email a few hours ago. sorry you thought it seemed so sketchy. a visit to the website hook-online.com mightve helped you conclude otherwise. maybe you can come next time?

we have a really good turnout for this first "escort meet, greet and eat" in DC. escorts - you are still able to register as I write this...

about the word "Hook" - - -

language has a lot of power. choosing the right - or wrong - word can produce extreme results. if you doubt this, just read any forum post - LOL.

a word that has social stigma or negative connotations can be used to control a group of people. some members of a society will use these words for their own benefit. if you look historically on "hot" words, you'll see that some groups of people who've been the recipients of the negative label, take that word and use it on their own. this is an effort to take control of the word. by controlling and using the word on their terms, the negative connotations are able to be, well, negated. here are some examples of words that have been taken back and used by some members of the group, to self-identify:

GROUP / DEROGATORY LABEL, NOW USED FOR SELF EMPOWERMENT

homosexual / "queer"

homosexual / "queen"

homosexual / "faggot"

lesbian / "dyke"

african american / "nigga"

woman who likes sex / "slut"

sex worker / "hooker"

sex worker / "wh***"

before this post is attacked, please recognize that I am not putting my own opinion here as to whether any of these terms are terms I endorse; I'm just stating facts of language evolution in terms of society. often when the term is starting to be used by some members of the group, other members in the group have strong feelings against its use.* the interesting thing is that at that same time, people who are outside the group experience confusion about hearing that term used by the in-group. the confusion is, in fact, the first step towards removing the power of the word.

so - sorry that I'm hi-jacking my own thread here with the linguistic angle - but what we're all seeing here - opposition to a word that has had negative connotations for a group - is not very surprising to me. I'd be happy to share my own particular views on the term Hook and any other term listed above, but for a multiple of reasons, this is not the place for me to do so.

*in fact, I think Daddy's has a strict policy against the use of one of the words above, and I suspect it may get "bleeped out" with asterisks when picked up by moderators.

Hope the DC kick-off was a big success! I love what HOOK is doing for our community in NYC and also the work my beloved Latino cousin Danny Cruz is doing with HOOK on the West Coast. Power to the Prostitutes! Oops, sorry, is that a bad word? :p

So what does one call a grouping of escorts? A bugaloo of gigolos? A galore of wh0res?

How 'bout "A survey of sex-workers"?

How about "A Bunch of Smart Guys Who Recognize the Need for Community, Education, and Support in a Stigmatized Industry?"

Wordy for sure, but it pretty much describes men involved in Hook.

Thanks for your words of support for Hook, Mike!

I regret that Dave took umbrage to my attempt at coming up with a collective noun for escorts.

The term "sex-worker" has been used by friends of mine who have been escorts or masseurs, in a non-judgemental way,

and has been used in politically correct publications around SF for the past 25 years or so, such as the Bay Guardan.

Now, as far as the feeble attempt at coining the collective descriptor, "pack" as in wolves, "murder" as in crows would definitely

have been pejorative. Now having taken the bother to look at the examples in wikipaedia, "shrewdness" is a nice term, but refers to apes, which my friends in the business have not been at all. "singularity" of boars isn't too bad and I suppose boars aren't quite

as deprecating as apes. "superfluity" refers to nuns (which my friends in the business have also not been, aside from one

who was a member of http://www.thesisters.org).

"School" might have been the least offensive (as in dolphins) and resonates somewhat about the event which is clearly more about sharing than instruction, but I still think "Survey" is pretty neutral.

Thin-skinnedly yours,

Honcho

Honcho,

The terms used to describe a group of escorts are very fluid and depend on the context of the sentence. For example, you might take an orgy of escorts to Steamworks, but you would take a mortgage of escorts on vacation to southern France.
