Recently extended to Oct 19 is the newest production from Playwrights Horizon called Booty Candy.

Written by African American playwright Robert O'Hara, the main character, Sutter is on an outrageous odyssey through his childhood home, his church, dive bars, motel rooms and even nursing homes. A kaleidoscope of sketches that interconnect to portray growing up gay and black, Robert O’Hara’s subversive, uproarious satire crashes headlong into the murky terrain of pain and pleasure and... BOOTYCANDY.

The play is an outrageous look at African American stereotypes and provides lots of laughs. Done as a series of vignettes with a small cast of 5 playing multiple roles, the main character goes through various stages of his life. I saw it Friday evening and thought it was entertaining, with some real hysterical moments.

The NYTimes review has a good overview and critique of the show.

Worth a look...

Saw Booty Candy a few weeks ago.

Dragged a friend along who really didn't want to see a "black gay show".

I thought it was a wonderful show, as did my reluctant friend. I would strongly recommend it to anyone.

The five actors put on an impressive performance. I'm glad to hear it got extended.
