Gay Tourism Ad Campaign Set

 

Using the advertising slogan "Get your history straight and your nightlife gay," Philadelphia hopes to attract vacationing homosexuals. The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corp. has begun a $300,000 marketing campaign to pursue its share of the $54 billion gay and lesbian travel market. "Gay travel is a virtually untapped segment of the travel industry, and with the support of Philadelphia's gay and straight community, we are proud to officially 'come out' as a gay-friendly destination," says Meryl Levitz, GPTMC president. "The Philadelphia region offers gay travelers a vibrant cultural scene, fine dining, outstanding accommodations and a year-round calendar of events of interest to gay travelers."

I started traveling to Philadelphia from New York City on weekends a little over a year ago and have become very fond of the city. The gay scene is indeed very vibrant. At certain times of the year, the major hotels offer a great deal there with their special overnight packages where you get a second weekend night free after booking the first night. One such period is right now through the month of March, 2004. I've already booked myself for the Doubletree at Broad & Locust (which I think is a great hotel) for the weekend of December 13-14 at a total cost of $168.
