Obviously, unprotected anal sex is very risky, but how risky is oral sex for the giver? I've seen info from a clinic in San Fran which says that oral sex is low risk. But how safe is servicing to completion for the giver? And what about deep-throating? Any evidence that this increases risk?

Here are two web sites that you can start out looking at. The trouble with these sorts of things which have always frustrated me is that the answers are always vague. It's very difficult to track exactly 'how' someone contracts HIV. Very few if any people just deep throat their partners and thus be available to compare to people who ONLY suck dick but don't deep throat. When someone does turn up HIV positive it's easier to guess that they contracted it through unprotected receptive anal intercourse if they admit to this practice, if they say the only engage in oral sex its harder to say if they got it from deep throating or just swallowing or just sucking someone without swallowing.

When you have oral sex (without a condom) a bit of common sense can help guide you. As one of the websites says, there is really no evidence that deep throating makes it any worse for the receiver. However, basic things like not giving head immediately after brushing or flossing, not giving head if you have open sores, or scratches in your mouth or throat. I'm sure you've heard all of these things before though and it doesn't answer your actual question.

The bottom line is that for the most part the most useful guidelines now are on the spectrum site immediately below.

This topic has been discussed here before. A lot. ;-) Have you done a search? You may get minimal responses because the regulars may be a little tired of the topic.

You'll find much better and more reliable information at sites such as the CDC's but it goes something like this:

ANY sex with another person (or even Ad rian) carries risk. The only safe sex is masturbation. Beyond that, it's safer sex. There is risk even if it's only minimal risk.

Unprotected oral sex is in the fairly safe category for HIV, but it's a great way to get Syphylis or a number of other STD's. Swallowing increases the risk.

It doesn't take much to find credible medical reports on the web (try Google), and they'll be far better guides than anything you'll get here.

Another very good Web Site is:

http://www.gayhealth.com

I've replied with this info before, but I'll repeat it for your convenience. This site covers many commonly asked questions about gay health. Dr. Stephen Goldstone, who is a gay doctor and well known author, answers questions very directly and in plain English. It's worth checking this site out.
