Paedophile urges 'must be accepted'

AMSTERDAM — Despite strong opposition, three paedophile men from Germany and the Netherlands are openly stating their sexual preference on an internet website, claiming that their sexual dispositions must be accepted, but an Amsterdam psychiatrist stands adamantly opposed to the demand.

"Just as you have homosexuals, you also have paedophiles," a Dutchman with self-confessed paedophilic tendencies, Norbert de Jonge, 25, has said.

 

The website (pedofilie.be) is already online on 1 August and lists the name of De Jonge and two Germans, Marthijn Uittenbogaard, 31, and Lindsay Ashford, 34, along with their photographs and city of residence. De Jonge also intends to include an essay describing how his thoughts and how he lives with them.

 

But a Vrije Universiteit University professor attached with forensic psychiatric clinic De Waag in Amsterdam, Ruud Bullens, said the new website will result in a pedophile witch hunt. He loudly criticised the initiative, claiming it was "reasonably thoughtless".

 

The professor also claimed that openly admitting paedophilic tendencies was akin to asking for beating and that all paedophiles, whether they committed criminal offences or not, need psychiatric treatment, a Nu.nl news report said on Thursday.

 

Paedophiles currently use false names to chat and surf the internet because they are concerned for publicly being mistreated or prosecuted. The community at large makes no distinction between people with paedophilic feelings and paedophiles who abuse children, it was reported.

 

But the three paedophiles hope that their new website, dubbed The Human Face of Paedophilia, will stimulate a public discussion to have their sexual dispositions accepted in among society.

 

"We want to stress that people with paedophile feelings have another preference," De Jonge, of the eastern Dutch city of Velp, said. Despite admitting that the paedophiles did not suggest how their thoughts should be handled, he also claimed that such people are very rarely children rapists.

 

But De Jonge is taking a huge risk and he understands this. He has informed his landlord and the local police about the website, warning them that their might be public reprisals and claimed that both the landlord and police reacted positively, labelled his actions as being brave.

 

De Jonge, who has never abused children, believes that the negative picture around paedophiles needs to be reversed and said the "wrong behaviour" of some paedophiles needs to be tackled, rather than the individual.

 

"I abhor child rapists because I have love for children and in my case, girls," he said.

 

 

De Jonge claims that from the age of 12 he loved girls his own age and that has never changed, but he refuses to talk about any sexual contact with children, saying the initial intention is to merely stimulate discussion.

 

But sexuality cannot go unspoken, such as that occurs among heterosexuals, the gay community and people with other sexual preferences and De Jonge outlines four conditions in which sex with a child should be allowed to occur: the child must also want to have sex, the contact must take place in harmony with the development of the child, he or she must always be allowed to withdraw from the relationship and complete openness with the parents must exist at all times.

 

The website also says that paedophiles are not just talking about penetration sex, but advocates age-appropriate sexual activity, claiming that children can enjoy and initiate sexual activity with their peers and older people. It also says they should be allowed to do so and that this would help lead to a decline in molestation crimes. The paedophiles involved with the website want to change legislation so that countries "no longer discriminate against young people and those who would love them".

 

But Dutch law states that sex with children is a criminal offence and the public prosecutor will prosecute suspects after a compliant is lodged with authorities. A child, the parents or the Council for the Protection of Children can lodge a complaint, but if a parent, step-parent, guardian, teacher or employer is suspected of child abuse, the public prosecutor can also decide to lay charges without a complaint having been submitted.

 

Professor Bullens is aware of the great dilemma presented to paedophiles, claiming that nature has saddled them with a considerable problem, which is also the case with low and highly gifted people, or for example, children with Down Syndrome.

 

"Living with paedophile feelings is not easy. Therefore, they must seek contact with the appropriate frameworks, with professional social workers and not make their dispositions pubic on an internet site. That leads to nothing," he said.

 

But the professor is also in favour of new dialogue between social workers and paedophiles. He said various attempts had been made in the past, but both groups simply reinforced their own attitudes and that at present, the gulf between the two cannot be bridged. Social work authorities resist all sexual contact with children, but paedophiles find that discussion must occur, he said.

 

Bullens, who treats molesters and their victims, believes that too many children have incurred psychological damage through sexual abuse. "Such as a victim once put into words: 'The man took away my right to learn and discover my own sexuality at my own tempo'. On this reason alone you must never want it. That is for me, the border that should never be crossed," Bullens said.

 

But for his part, De Jonge said engaging in dialogue with therapists such as Bullens was almost impossible because he only wanted to treat paedophiles. He said such an attitude stood diametrically opposed to paedophile requests to have their sexual preferences accepted.
