I am a big fan of reality tv. I admit it. I love Big Brother, Survivor, The Real World, ect..

Now, Bravo TV has come out with one that I am really excited about. It is called Boy Meets Boy. :) Here is what it says from http://www.bravotv.com

Bravo is proud to present television's first gay dating series with "Boy Meets Boy," a new twist on a traditional dating show. You've heard all the controversial buzz–now you can see for yourself what everyone is talking about!

"Boy Meets Boy," hosted by Dani Behr ("Extra"), is Bravo's distinctive reality gay dating series with twists that explore the unexpected, leaving the viewers on the edge of their seats.

In the premiere episode, viewers will meet James (leading man) a handsome, 32-year old administrator in the human resources department of a law firm. James and the fifteen potential mates will live in luxurious but separate accommodations. The suitors vie for his affections by participating in group activities and attending one-on-one dates, while James–with advise from his best friend Andra–eliminate men at the end of each episode.

THE TWIST! What the leading man and Andra don't know is that some of the "mates" are actually STRAIGHT men posing as gay men–an interesting twist allowing for numerous avenues of heated on-air discussions and debates that challenge socially preconceived notions of what is considered gay and straight behavior.

CAN YOU GUESS who is straight and who is gay? Watch the premiere episode and cast your vote on the Bio Page of each mate. Then keep watching every Tuesday night at 9/8pm to find out if your guesses are correct.

Boy Meets Straight Boy

I normally dislike reality shows, and I only watch an occasional episode so I don't appear too ignorant in conversations.

I have to think about this one...I was okay with the description--kind of an intellectual MTV's "Dismissed," which sometimes features gay trios--until I got to THE TWIST. I'm all for challenging stereotypes, but I'm not sure that's the only point. If it were, why don't we have 10 guys vying for a woman's attention, and let 3-5 of those guys be gay? (Bet she would pick a gay man, lol.) Another reaction: It seems cruel to tell a gay man that another guy is gay (and available), only to find out that he is straight (and unavailable).

I guess it's the manipulation/deception that irks me. Joe Millionaire (is that right?) was also deceptive, and people had trouble with that. Deceiving someone about sexual orientation seems even nastier than deceiving someone about wealth. The latter is about challenging what you really value; what is the point of the former?

That was my initial reaction, which is subject to revision. I'll have to think about it some more, and listen to the opinions of others.

RE: Boy Meets Straight Boy

I guess I liked the "straight" guys thrown into the mix. I have always said my gaydar was 100% accurate all the time. So far I haven't been wrong. :) But, if I were in a house when I thought everyone was gay and vying for my attention, would it even cross my mind? I don't know. But, I do want to watch the show to find out.

I'll watch it until my gaydar is wrong. Then, I will join a group for depression because my entire life would be shambles.

RE: Boy Meets Straight Boy

I have a problem with thes shows with a "twist." On the one hand. all these people are aspiring actors who are sort of whoring themselves(sorry), so in some sense they get what they deserve. But the star of this show did seem at least somewhat sincere in searching for a mate, and he did apparently sound a little bitter about the experience, and did get upset when told of the tiwst halfway through the show.

Misrepresenting your affection is a lot different than misrepresenting your wealth, and setting up one predetermined person to be the butt of the joke is worse IMO than doing this to the larger group. "Joe Millionaire" didn't bother me. "For Love or Money" did. And this one does too.

My opinion might be different if he had been told upfront that the show was a study in stereotypes and he that some of the guys were straight. But to spring it on him later on, when he may have started to actually develop FEELINGS for someone or other, was heartless. And classless.

But then I guess I shouldn't expect class from this particular genre.
