Last night on my third date (in 20 years), I did something I haven't done in a long, long time (no, not sex...) It has been years since I have spent a wonderful summer evening at the Hollywood Bowl. The whole evening was seredipitous. I received a call at mid-day asking if I would be interested in attending the concert, with box seat paid for and dinner included. I of course said yes. We took the shuttle in from Chatsworth and the ride was so easy and fast (going against ruch hour traffic.) Had a Wonderful dinner at the Patio Grill and then took our box (six seats with table..two people). The evening weather was perfect, our seats awesome (nice neighbors) Lots of gay brothers in the audience so plenty of eye candy and the music masterful.

I had forgotten how marvelous the experience at the bowl can be. Opening night of the summer season. Had a great time.

For those interested the program consisted of:

Wagner. Perlude to The Mastersingers of Nuremburg

Liszt..Piano Concerto #2 in A

Beethoven. 7th Symphony

I had forgotten how much fun dating can be.

Hey jackhammer,

I have personally never been able to get into Opera at all and only seldomly into classical music, but that is beside the point, and why I'm stating this really has nothing to do with why I responded.

I just wanted to say that I thought this was a very beautiful post. The kind that makes you smile and reminesce about good times, good places and good people. This place could use more such posts and I thank you for lifting my spirits for a few "bright shining moments". :)

He did so:

His opening statement was:

> Last night on my third date (in 20 years),

and he concluded by saying:

>I had forgotten how much fun dating can be.

(and, no, I wasn't the lucky guy who went with him).

I believe Chuck was making a joke. As in, he went with JackHammer but didn't think the evening was an official "date". :-)

I, too, am glad to hear that you had a great time, Jack! I hope you will have many more - either with the same guy, or someone else.

Good for you, Jackhammer!

I like the program, too. Beethoven's 7th Symphony is very nice listening--it's one of the few "happy" works he wrote. Good date music!

More to come? ;-)

Not crazy about the music on your date, though I have been to the Bowl many times and it's a fun place to enjoy the company of a close friend :).

GG,

I enjoyed the symphony, my favorite is the second movement but my date prefers the third. My take on classical is limited, I am not up for everything, but the whole environment, the sounds, the people, it was a great night. As for more, well sure, if he's into it. I have to leave it to him. It's kinda complicated. Trust me, you don't want to know (and neither does Woodlawn..he he).

But there's something to this dating thing...I think I like it. and it's much cheaper than what I was doing. Ha.

Thanks Jim (btmstudNYC) you were right...just go out, go out, go out.

Er, not being a Beethoven specialist, but being an oboe player, but quickly offhand I can think of symphonies no 6 (i.e.. "Fantasia"), 2, 1, the piano wind quintet, the wind sextet ...

I'm sure Deej can think of more. I'll admit that a lot of his piano sonata are somber tho.

I like symphony no. 7 so much that, and it made such an impression on me, that

even though I don't clailm to have perfect pitch, if I think of the opening and try to

hum that note (an "A" - important for oboists), that I'm usually less than a half step off.

Call me Schroeder

I love Beethoven, especially the symphonies, but I don't know if I would describe 1, 2, and 6 as "happy" (which has the connotation of "light" for me). I think 7, 8, and maybe 4 are lighter. Of course, I was a clarinetist, not an oboist, so that may explain the difference. :+

Wasn't the 7th the one Liszt called the "Dance Symphony" and proved it by dancing throughout an entire performance?

Anyway, the important point is that Jackhammer had a wonderful date!
