I started watching this because I love Vera Famiga but there are more reasons: 2 hot hunks. Max Thierot, who always played young twinks, has buffed up a bit and gotten scruffy and now he's hot as hell. And then there's buff Mike Vogel as the deputy sheriff. No shirtless scenes but looks like we'll have a few in the coming weeks.

The LA Times called it Crazy As Hell and I agree. So far it's really fun.

It really is. A lot of fun. I like American Horror Story during the first season then it got TOO crazy for me. BATES MOTEL is just crazy enough.

Operalover, you missed bringing up Norman the future shower butcher, played by cute Brit Freddie Highmore. (perhaps not your type but would make an outrageous bedmate for me). By the way does everyone know that all those glass showers all over the home design magazines are directly attributable to the movie Psycho and its Bates Motel shower scene? Rarely in the history of cinema has home design been so radically affected by a movie. Just glad I didn't invest in the shower curtain business.

I completely agree about Max Thieriot and Mike Vogel. Two very attractive men (although Max has some tattoos - ugh) who we'll hopefully see shirtless in some future episode. Does anybody know how the ratings are so far? If they aren't doing too well, I suggest the writers have Max and Mike become lovers with lots of steamy scenes :)

I didn't miss it. It was intentional. He was a cute kid in FINDING NEVERLAND but now he's a dorky, lanky twink. No, not my type. But he's perfect for the young Norman Bates. Definitely a creepy side to that kid.

Now, THAT would be hot. I think the premiere episode got A&E's highest ratings in years. Don't know if it's holding up. I didn't know Max has tatoos, sadly, they've had him completely clothed so far. C'mon guys, get with it already!

I'm hooked too. The acting is fantastic. Freddie and Vera really nail their parts. And the writing has just enough humor to keep it from being dreadful...as in full of dread. I think Freddie is adorable. But I like gangly, nerdy twinks.

Too bad it's just a short series. I think it is only something like 10 episodes.

I was hooked after the first episode! However, I was a bit dismayed because it takes place in the present day. I had assumed it would have taken place prior to 1960, explaining what brought us to the Bates Motel in 1960. What are your thoughts on this?

I think they hit the right balance setting in present day but dressing Norma and Norman like they are in the late 50's, early 60s.

For the previous question it is on A&E, Monday nights at 10 and repeating through the week. It's also available "on demand" on most cable systems. And I think you can watch episodes on the A&E website too.

None. Because it makes no difference to me. I see no reason the piece has to be set in 1960 or before.

Almost all cable series (from Mad Men to Justified to The Walking Dead to Dexter to Homeland) have seasons of between 10 and 13 episodes these days.
