That's fair. I'm sure people who get paid in cash pay the same taxes they would if they received W-2s, 1099s ...

I understand your point of view, you would like everybody to be honest but I think you are being naïve about this.

If you get paid cash, you can pay a lot of bills with money orders, you can also buy groceries, pay your credit cards, etc. Unless you are audited you'll be able to get away with it.

I know a retired escort in DC who simply built a small gym in one of his bedroom, deposited money in his accounts and paid whatever he wanted to pay for taxes as "personal trainer". He never had any issues with the IRS.

Others simply send their money with international money orders to other countries.

I don't think its a reasonable expectation for people paid in cash to report and pay all related taxes as if they received W-2s, etc. But we might assume some do. I think its that I'm a little envious I haven't had the same tax saving opportunity. A couple of times a year I look at the total of taxes withheld and think what I could do with that money (surely spend some of it on "companionship"), then I have a glass of scotch and move onto something more pleasant :)

I think its a reasonable belief that everyone paid in cash *should* do it, but I'm with you -- its not reasonable to *expect* that they would :p

A better subject heading for this thread should be:

"Why do PEOPLE blow all their money?"

Escorts are just like people. I know plenty of people who are not escorts who are blowing their money or going into debt. I have a 32 year old designer friend in Williamsburg who lives job to job with $74,000 in credit card debit, an apartment he can't afford, and he's still out there night after night racking up more debt.

It's human, not an escort thing.

Operalover hit the nail on the head. This is a societal problem. I can't begin to list the number of friends and colleagues that I have who make 6 figure (some 7 figure) salaries and yet they would probably be hard pressed to qualify for a standard visa card because they have acquired so much debt. My personal explanation is that as a society we are becoming more selfish and need the gratification of material objects. Regardless of my pop psychology assessment, there are certainly a growing number of people across all the income spectrums that out-spend their income. It is bad enough in one's working years when the income can theoretically be recouped. But, many will live with this debt far into retirement.

Back to the OPs original question, I don't think you can teach an adult about handling money, or anything else, unless that person is interested in learning.

Yep. This guy goes around like he's a "gay prince of New York" -- his term, not mine -- cocktails every night, dinner out, Prada this, Prada that, travel, all on credit cards. I don't think he grossed $75,000 last year. Loft in Williamsburg ... and he also still has student loan debt. I came close to helping him out but after an initial try of a couple thousand (which he just used to support his extravagant life), I decided against it. It would be like throwing money away. He keeps saying he knows he's going to hit it big one of these days and he's not worried. "I like to live on the edge and take chances." Oddly, he's really "responsible" about everything else. It makes no sense.
