I have a very vague job opportunity in Qatar from either 2 to 5 years. Even if I could get the position, I'm not sure how I feel about living in the Middle East. It doesn't seem to be at it's most stable point right now. And then there is Sharia. Other considerations- what would it be like for a gay male- who doesn't do well at hooking up in the USA- to be in a place where hooking up is illegal and possibly deadly.

On top of that- a large portion of my work colleagues would be Arabs- educated Arabs- but it's not like I'm going to one of those jobs where you are surrounded by other American workers.

On top of that, I'm Jewish.

I'd appreciate opinions on those more knowledgable than I am.

I've done a lot of work in the Middle East. My best advice is stay off questionable sites unless you use a Tor program and import men from the surrounding free countries. Not as expensive as you might think.

I'm a total wimp ..,

... and unless you have no other opportunities, I would stay the hell out of there.

Or set something up where you can visit occasionally and telecommute between.

PM me if you wannah chat.

Alot will depend on the company that employs you and what benefits they provide, such as regular paid trips to other countries in Europe, etc. I was in Dubai and AbuDabi once a few years ago, and I have no interest in going back. I was treated like royalty because of who invited me, but unless you are a guest/employee of a company that is owned and managed by a member of a royal family, one has to be very careful. I have colleagues (women) who have managed to do well there, and they have quarterly all expenses paid to anywhere they want to go, Europe, Asia, USA or what ever and usually for a week at a time, plus three weeks of paid vacation and airfare to where ever they want to go. The money can be fantastic, and she has built an incredible nest eg for her retirement. I met a few Americans who worked in the health care industry there too who loved it, but they were married (to a woman) and had most of the same benefits that my friend had. You might consider a two year stint if the money is great, but be prepared to be a friend to your hand for a long time, unless you have those benefits. It would be the experience of a lifetime, but your employer is the key as is the employer's relationship to the ruling families.

Can you explain what a Tor program is and what surrounding free countries are there? You could private message me, but I'm sure others on the Forum would be interested in your answers. Oh and I wasn't just talking about hiring escorts--but G-d forbid--would it even be possible to find either a local guy or an American/European/Australian/etc to at the very least be F-ck Buddies with?

Thanks,

In reading other forums I have seen plenty of expats complain about life in the Middle East. But those were mainly related to Dubai/UAE.

I spent a night in Doha between flights once. It seemed kind of depressing to me. Clearly it is a place with more money than they know what to do with. The "guest workers" who are shipped in from South Asia and the Philippines to build the place live in pretty awful conditions while the ruling class rides around in their Bentleys. Of course there is plenty of inequality everywhere though. I guess you can make a lot of money over there if you can stand to be there for a couple of years. Then of course there's the climate.

I wouldn't worry about radical Islamists in Qatar. The Arab population is too wealthy for that or to allow it to rise up and undo their cushy lifestyle.

Here's the home for the Tor Project:

https://www.torproject.org/

A practical use of it to use a tor server as a web proxy, so that outsiders can't track what sites you visit or snoop on your email.

It is a double edged sword - although the dissidents in Egypt made use of it to get their news out to the west,

Al Queda can use the technology to hide more effectively.

Both the US State Department and the Defense Department are leading separate efforts investigating the technology.
