I just typed in http://www.gaymelbourne.com but did not go beyond the home page. Do this, please! I think your query will be somewhat answered. I lived in Melbourne for two years many years back and had the best of times.

But since it has been a while, lots and lots and lots of things have certainly changed; thus I am quite loathe to make any recommendations.

Do what I suggested and go from there. {...was told that Melbourne is the place now, but I don't know. I've always been quite partial to Sydney which has a similar beat as San Francisco.}

You can find out a lot via http://www.tripadvisor.com and http://www.fodors.com in terms of "places to see, things to do, and venues for eating." There are reviews at the former website.

I was there about 10 years ago and really loved it. I want to go back some day. I guess any travel site or guide book will be full of plenty to do. The public transport system of trams is very good. Take a boat trip on the river. It's a nice way to while away some time on a nice day.

I am a sucker for observation decks so I did the Rialto Tower thing. It's way up there.

If you are interested in sports at all, a tour of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (The MCG) is worthwhile. There's an Olympics museum there and you get to see the stadium's museum which is related mainly to cricket as well as Aussie Rules Football. As a footy fan I really enjoyed it.

You can take the tram out to the suburbs like St. Kilda which is on the water and nice place to wander around.

Of course this is all 10 years old at this point so some things may have changed. But I liked all of the various neighborhoods that seemed to scale down the city a bit. There are lots of parks and greenery. The Botanic garden and war memorial are interesting places. In that sense it reminded me a good bit of my home here in DC.

There was a little brothel there in those days that I visited once or twice.
