What exactly were we supposed to figure out? Were you playing "Name That Tune"? The song is called "Criminal," it's from "The Marshall Mathers LP," which I thought was one of the best albums of 2000.

Yes, I do believe that freedom of speech is something everyone is entitled to, not just people the gay mafia, on the one hand, or the Christian Coalition, on the other, happens to agree with. On that score, an interesting editorial in the L.A. Times titled "'Rights Just for Us': The Gay Left's Self-Serving Agenda":

http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/opinion/la-oe-vincent27mar27,1,5711158.story

But as for it being my money, I've downloaded all three of Eminem's CDs as well as the excellent "8 Mile" soundtrack. I don't buy major-label CDs except used. I take much greater exception to major media's attempts to lock-up all forms of expression for its own profit than I do to Eminem's cathartic ranting. The latter is usually exhilarating, when not tedious.

You, of course, are entitled to your opinion, not that you seem to be able to express it very eloquently -- certainly no where near as eloquently or entertainingly as Eminem typically expresses his.

RE: Uncle Tom Bitch

Not too bad! But can you sing it?

For the record, Eminem has never called me a faggot. You, however, have. And as for being "down with it," no one who has as much cheesy '80s synth-pop as I do could ever fall into that category.

The problem with people who think like you do is that you give no credence to the thoughts and opinions of others; indeed, it seems you don't think others are even capable of forming them. You never asked why I do like Eminem's music -- I'm guessing because you don't care. You seem to believe you know what everybody else thinks, and that you know better.

You are like those people who take The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn out of school libraries because Twain used the word "nigger." Or like the GLAAD would-be thought police who believe that if they can control every instance of media and artistic reference to homosexuality then they can control how people feel about homosexuality. All such "anti-defamation" groups have the same agenda -- to proscribe speech through any means possible, to create a litmus test that everything must pass. That has never been how art or culture thrives, nor is it how critical or commercial success typically has been measured. And just as importantly, it has never been how anyone's mind has been opened or changed.

Jon Pareles, the rock critic for The New York Times, wrote after the 2000 Grammy Awards that there is a song on Steely Dan's album "Two Against Nature," which beat out "The Marshall Mathers LP" for Album of the Year, that is written from the point-of-view of a pederast -- a first-person account of sexual attraction to a minor. Yet there was no public outcry, no threatened boycotts, nothing. Why? Because the mainstream (read: white) understands that it is a song, that Becker & Fagen are taking artistic license rather than literally expressing their own lust. Yet, when hip-hop artists address similarly controversial issues, white people go apeshit. "They're saying you should kill policemen!" "They're saying to beat up women! / gays! / etc." I guess when it comes to expressions of black culture (and hip-hop, including Eminem's brand, is very much an expression of black American culture), people such as yourself find it inconceivable that those expressions take every bit as much artistic license as any other. The problem I have with the GLAAD mindset is that they don't actually hear, see, or read very much in context -- they pull out a few choice quotes or images that fail their litmus test, and start pointing and screaming. There are Christian, Jewish, and Muslim groups that do the same thing, as well as women's organizations and other minority groups, including black groups. If we actually listened to them all, we would spend the rest of our lives in silence.

They don't even attempt to understand, as you have not attempted to understand. You just bring on the insults and slurs that, paradoxically, you condemn others for using.

Alas, I don't think I will ever understand people like you.

You just hit the jackpot with that one - not the posting but the reference to Cleo Laine. She has just got to be one of the best artists of the last century. What a great recording. The other one I like is the one about falling with the the thieving boy. Great artist!!!

Love Eminen for his passion and poetry. As far as his gay bashing goes, it's no worse than much of the crap that goes on in here - from ourselves.
