Every once in a while, I find that I don't know something that I probably should. (Mind you, I don't know quite a lot, but a lot of it I shouldn't know.)

Anyway. My question today is how to put the tilde-~- above the letter that calls for it. Since the ~ requires a shift key, and the letter doesn't, I can't figure it out.

Can someone kindly help?

Usually you have to go to special characters. In MS Word go to Insert Symbols. Once there you might find that there is also a keyed shorcut for the character you want.

I can't do it. there are all kinds of suggestions on the internet, but none of them work. I tried ♦ and got that (165n, holding alt key with numlock on.)

So I'm guessing your on a PC and not a Mac, yes? And you're trying to do this in Word?

Yes, I am on a PC. It was quietly suggested to me to simply cut and paste the letter from here, and I did so, with success.

I have every reason to think that I will be using the imadummy thread again!

Lucky,

On a pc cut and paste for special characters is simply faster and easier. If that's not an option: On the top toolbar, click insert. From the dropdown menu, click symbol. That brings up a screen with two tabs, symbols and special characters. The symbols tab gives special characters for several different languages. (You are using word?)

On the iSomething, at least under iOS 6, if you hold a key down, the keypad offers the diacriticals Since we're nearing a season where noëls are sung in São Paulo, it nice to know, especially if you want to order a salad Niçoise.
