I saw these shows this past week and enjoyed both a great deal.

Closer Than Ever - a song cycle at the York Theater that won best off Broadway musical in 1989. It focuses on all of the relationships in out lives, romantic, familial, friendships, etc.

Old Jews Telling Jokes - very, very funny. 85 minutes of non-stop laughter.

Both are very well directed. They're filled with inventive detail.

I also loved Closer Than Ever and will probably go back. Four terrific singers, (unmiked) singing songs that deal with many facets of life. The songs by Maltby and Shire are classic "American Songbook-esque" tunes with melodies and engaging lyrics.

Christiane Noll, the most recognizable singer here, was Mother in the last revival of Ragtime, and her soprano is lovely.

The other singers, Jenn Collella, Sal Viviano and George Dvorsky are all wonderful performers as well.

This plays at the YORK through mid-July. Discounts are available on BroadwayBox and sometimes on tdf.
