Imagine being THIS guy, having to lug around a 100 lb scrotum due to a rare medical condition.

Wesley Warren Jr was offered FREE surgery from Dr Oz to try and correct his condition BUT turned it down due to his fear of the severe complications that could occur.

I am on the fence with this one, on whether I would risk the surgery or choose to live with the life-changing condition.. I think I would probably TAKE the risk, as life is so limited anyway in that state, I would grasp at any straw to live a normal life.

What about you ? would you risk life changing surgery with No guarantees of success ????

No indication of what the "rare medical condition" is but in some tropical areas, elephantiasis can impact the scrotum of a male and lead to hyper-enlargement of the scrotum.

I am not in the medical field but it seems that surgery could certainly allow this person to lead a much less restricted life than he is leading now and there have many cases of success in surgical reduction of an individual's scrotum. There is risk in almost all surgeries, but if this were me? I would definitely risk it.

Apparently this gentleman was told the complications and they outweighed everything else.

Since the lack of linked citation from the OP caused me to believe that this was some made-up freak story connected to perhaps a personal kinky sex-fantasy :D, I decided to Google it and found out otherwise.

This freakish medical condition is real and has been getting worse and has been getting some press for sometime.

It's difficult to imagine how this got to be so bad over just four years without any type of medical intervention by now. Now comes the 15 minutes of fame twist, with some in silent, and others in public bidding to help.

There's so much easy humor here for the giving. But it's actually quite a very sad sack situation.

What are the "severe complications" that may happen? And the chances of them happening? What is the prognosis with not doing the surgery? I would need alot more info before I could answer whether or not I would have the procedure.

I doubt that this is caused by filariasis or podoconiosis, the common causes of elephantiasis. I think it's just a hydrocele or, perhaps, a hernia, gone WAY out of control.

Baring any co-morbidities, his cardiac risk is about 0.1% (American College of Cardiologists, 2007, risk of non-cardiac surgery).

The article says it's a lymphatic condition, so the possibility of cure is somewhat less, i.e., it's more like elephantiasis than a hyrdrocele.

The long term risk of carrying a pannus that large around include cellulitis, Fournier's gangrene, and other infections.

Since he's been given the go for free surgery, I would say, go for it.

I would have the surgery and accept the risk of severe complications. I am 6'4" and weigh 220. I can't imaging life with nearly half my body weight hanging between my legs.

The condition is rare and causes an accumulation of water around the testicles which causes massive increase in scrotum size and discomfort.

I forgot: Necrotizing Fasciitis. Great word.

After spending some stomach-turning time with the results of Google searches, I now know more than I want to about the causes and results of scrotal enlargement. Apparently men who have not been in places where tropical diseases are common can suffer from something termed "epididymitis"---I won't go into the medical details, they are available on line and I hope I can blot this newly discovered information from my mind!!
