With this past weekend's release of "Prometheus," I've been thinking about "smart" movies, since a lot of the criticism of this film centers on whether or not there are some gaping holes in the plot, and how they affect the overall success of the film.

9 to 5 has been lauded as a funny movie. Is it a "smart" movie? Maybe—since it's a pretty dead-on skewering of the trials and tribulations faced by working women in the 70s and 80s. Granted, it's definitely slapstick as well, but IMHO the construction of the film around three women and the problems they face in the workplace is actually quite sophisticated.

What is your favorite "smart" movie, and why?

The Muppets take Manhattan.... An Ethnically diverse group of furry misfits navigating their way thru the trials and tribulations of a NYC backdrop.... Social commentary at its best, with wry wit, lots of heart, and social acceptance. :D

Only if it's a double feature paired up with "JJ & His Golden Kneepads."
