I am going to San Diego for a five day weekend this weekend...have not been there in many years. I am wanting to experience the best that the gay life has to offer while there..any suggestions as to nice spas, recommended escorts, clubs, etc...not into sleeze...like things nice. Also, would love to treat myself to a complete makeover pampering at gay salon. I am flexible on time and open to suggestions on anything that a gay man should want to experience while in the San Diego area...thanks guys for any help you can give me.

Well, then, you want to see HILLCREST -- that's the gay area in SD and is quite a bit bigger, newer, cleaner and more welcoming than the Castro in SF, for instance.

You really should to see the touring stage production, the "Making of Porn" with Matthew Rush and a great cast all in all. We saw it a few weeks ago and it was hilarious and well worth the time. Hamburger Marys is a good place to eat one dinner and sorta the early evening club, but be prepared for loud even while eating. The Flick, Numbers and several others are all in Hillcrest, or close to it. We ate our meals there, shopped there -- but stayed downtown, about 8 minutes away. There are a couple small boutique hotels/B&B near or in Hillcrest and of course gayowned and operated and occupied, but have no idea if any good.

The entire downtown area seems gay friendly however, and we stayed at the Wyndham--Emerald Plaza--very gay friendly. If I were you, I'd head up to Hillcrest and get one or both of the 2 gay rags there and see what's happening--I know they have gay spas and a couple of bath houses advertised, as well as anything else you may be looking for gay }(

San Diego is a great place to visit. As mentioned Hillcrest is the gay area of town. There are several nightclubs along University on both sides of 6th. Most of these clubs cater to the younger dance crowd. There are also quite a few coffee houses and cafes. If you're looking for a more full service resturant check out the options on 5th avenue.

The Gaslamp district is more of a late twenty - forty something place to party. It isn't gay specific yet is gay friendly. If you enjoy jazz music visit Croces (Do you remember Jim?). There are many resturants and hotels in the Gaslamp district.

For normal shopping Horton Plaza is also downtown on Broadway and 4th. Again not gay specific yet gay friendly.

Don't visit San Diego without checking out th Beaches. If you're into to twink types or college prep boys go to Pacific Beach or Ocean Beach. If you're looking for something a little more Blacks beach in LaJolla. This is a illegal, yet nude gay beach. It is very dangerous trying to get down to the beach so if you're not in good condition or unsure of yourself don't try.

Get a copy of Update the main free gay zine. There is a gay bath house in Ocean Beach, I believe it's called Daves. It has been years since I was last there ... I did have a lot of fun then.

Escorts, well you didn't mention the type of guy you're looking for. My first choice would be Myles (who is reviewed on this site). Also, one of the few reputable agencies is active in the San Diego area, Man to Man Escorts. Naturally, the escorts will be more expensive though it sometimes is nice to do one-stop shopping.

One note of caution. Like any large city there are some very hardcore areas around San Diego. Several of these areas boarder a few of the places I suggested. If you stay on the "main path" you shouldn't have any problems.

Enjoy your trip ... it truly is Americas Finest City :) .
