There is a peaceful section in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park which has for some time been set aside as an AIDS Memorial. A lot of work went into creating the space, which is peaceful, dignified, and respectful of those who have lost their lives to this disease. Many people advocated for the Grove, not the least of whom was former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a congressperson from San Francisco. She was a strong and effective Speaker, and her legacy will be long remembered.

But I take issue with having a portion of the Aids Memorial Grove named after her. A section has now been named the Nancy Pelosi Leadership Pathway, and I submit that this is simply not necessary. What was a dignified tribute is now marred by a political intrusion. What's next? Billboards or advertising on park benches? Will a gay leader now find the need to have his or her name dedicated to another place in the Grove? And then another?

It's an unwelcome intrusion into a spot where we should be able to find peace and reflect on what we have been through and what we have lost. I am not against honoring Pelosi. Let's rename Market Street for her.
