L2P,

I have to agree. After nearly a decade of couseling the homeless (many of whom are alcoholics and addicts) and watching some of them fight the fight, I have come to the conclusion that while for many, these failures are a disease, ultimately the addictions are the idividual's way of putting a bandaid on a deeper problem or running from the problem altogether. They DO need to acknowledge their inability to fight the problem alone and there is much room for more help in these areas. But to the original post, The star in question, while possessing an immense talent, does not have any excuse for "slipping" and driving, putting everyone else in danger in the processs. Clearly, she needed to stay longer in the Malibu facility until she could sort out the problems. Life happens, stress, fame, betrayal, etc, can cause anyone to lose it. But the fact remains, that not even immense talent and fame should shield us from the consequences of our actions (whether controlled or not).

The continuing interest in this story has obviously struck a chord with this group.........as I age- and the statistics bear me out- I seem to be drinking more and enjoying it less. Fortunately, I haven't started pouring gin in with my morning orange juice, but my previously customary single glass of wine in the evening seems to be stretching into 2 or 3, which also is sending me to bed a lot earlier.......anyone else here in their 50's concerned also?

The one evening I don't drink is when I'm seeing an escort. I found that out the first time I hired one......had several glasses at dinner, and couldn't perform for shit afterwards! Wish I could afford the escort treatment every night!

I experienced my first DUI stop this fall coming home late after a very stressful day and one beer.....I just couldn't seem to keep my eyes open, and a cop noticed me drifting off the road. Fortunately it was a cold night and standing outside doing the one legged knee bend( the test where D.R. fell down laughing) woke me up quick, and the breathalizer didn't prove anything. But an experience I don't want to repeat any time soon......

The Diana Ross episode happened very close to me.....the blockbuster is one I go to often, but never ran into Miss Ross, or anyone else famous, there. Maybe this is some kind of forewarning?

Probably. But this is a good thing. It seems to have given you something to think about. And you're lucky in that you're still in a position to make choices from this point forward that will benefit/protect you and society as a whole. Good luck!

To me the issue is not whether Ms. Ross is an alcoholic or not. It is the issue of Driving while drunk! Many innocent people have lost their lives due to someone's short trip to the Video store or wherever they felt it was so important to go while impaired. There is nothing wrong with having a strong passion against drunk drivers.

Here close to home (and close to Taylor's home also since we live in the same state)a few years ago, a drunk driver struck a school bus returning from an amusement park resulting in the largest fatal drinking related accident in US history. I knew some of the first responders on the scene and have had first hand contact with some survivors and family members. The bus burst into flames and those that got out and the responders still live with the screams of young teenage kids as they burnt to death.

Once the brain gets so hot it starts to boil and the pressure causes the Skull to explode and make a large popping sound. Imagine witnessing this or retrieving what is left of the bodies after the fire was extinguished. Have you ever put a body in a body bag before? I have, unfortunately several.

So Sorry, whether an addiction, a disease, pure careless, or whatever... it is still NO excuse to drive drunk!

Diana Ross needs to find her own personal David Gest to "straighten" her out.}(

The fact that she was described as coooperative should be a dead giveaway thatshe was drunk or high! This baby hasn't been cooperative since she was just li'l ole Diane from Detroit - long before she was a superstar of immense talent.

I agree that alcoholism is a disease. I agree that what has happened to her is sad. I also agree that I have absolutely no sympathy for people who drive drunk. She should consider herself fortunate and do some serious soul-searching and rehab time.

Hello VaHawk:

You made some very astute observations regarding several issues. The only one that I am happy to correct is the fact that since last summer, bus service has been tremendously expanded in Phoenix. We now has bus service until midnight on most routes six days a week and a reduced schedule on Sunday. I still have to look twice when I see a bus late at night or on Sunday.

Court ordered treatment here, as is in most places a joke. I know of an individual who gets drunk once a week. Yes, at his court ordered treatment. They go in with a Big Gulp cup filled with vodka as they view the latest stupid video or old movie.

I never intended to minimalize or defend Ms. Ross' actions, as there is no excuse for drinking and driving. There is controversy as to whether or not alcohol dependence is a disease. Using accepted medical criteria however, alcohol dependence is indeed a disease. A condition does not have to be non-self inflicted in order to qualify as a disease. Do individuals with lung cancer have a disease?

Alcohol dependence is a disease of the brain, created by prolonged exposure to alcohol. Each time a human being takes a drink of alcohol, a chemical chain reaction starts in the brain resulting in the release of a number of chemicals, most importantly endorphins. The sequence is simple. Alcohol is ingested, quickly flows to the stomach. From there, much of it passes through the stomach wall and into the blood system, where it is carried to the brain. The alcohol is attracted to what are called Opioid Receptor sites (a receptor can be compared to a message center, that receives a stimulous and then forwards or directs a message). The message is sent to the Opioid Endogenous System located in the pleasure center of the brain, causing a cascading of endorphins into the system. It is the endorphins that provide that almost immediate sense of relief or euphoria that alcohol generates.

Individuals with a genetic predisposition have a much lower treashold for the release of enorphins, which separates them from social or moderate drinkers. An individual with a genetic predisposition gets a far larger impact from one drink of alcohol than does the social drinker.

As an individual continues to drink alcohol over a long period of time, the brain literally aclimates to the artificial stimulation. The brain slows down the normal production and release of endorphins in response to the added production stimulated by the alcohol. It should be noted that endorphins assist us in dealing with stress, anxiety, low self-esteem and so on. Alcohol dependence is created not by a character flaw or lack of motivation, but by compromised brain chemistry. The article cited below is a very readable explanation of what causes alcohol dependence. Anyone that cannot access the article, I will be happy to forward it to you

Your brain on alcohol

A new understanding of how alcohol alters brain chemistry may transform treatment of the disease

To further support the disease model is the fact that medicine now has available several very effective medications, that if appropriately utilized, mean the difference between success or failure in the recovery attempt. The most important of these new medications is Naltrexone. Naltrexone, within an hour of ingestion, suppresses the intense craving to drink which is generated by the brain and its chemicals. It is extrememly safe, not addicting either physically or emotionally, and can be discontinued at any time without an adverse reaction.

Diana Ross has to face the music, as a result of her decision to put herself and more importantly innocent people at risk. Did she get a ride because she is famous, probably. Should she go to jail, absolutely. Should we label her as an evil deva not deserving of our understanding, absolutely not.

Now they want to destroy her career. I feel it's unfair that people gain out of her tragic events :( . She needs friends, treatment and support at this time.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A judge has temporarily prevented police from releasing video shot during singer Diana Ross' drunken-driving arrest earlier this week.

Ross' attorney, Greg Davis, argued the video isn't public record because it wasn't made by the police officer who made the traffic stop. Davis said the officer who shot it did so only after learning the driver was Ross.

Davis also said releasing the video would irreparably damage Ross' right to a fair trial.

Bev Ginn, representing the city, told the judge the tapes were "made under the ordinary course of business."

Pima County Superior Court Judge John F. Kelly, who approved the temporary restraining order Thursday, set a Jan. 14 hearing to discuss a permanent injunction.

Several media outlets, including "Inside Edition," the Arizona Daily Star and KOLD-TV, have requested copies.

Ross, 58, received misdemeanor citations early Monday for driving under the influence and extreme DUI after police received a report of someone driving the wrong way down an east Tucson street.

A breath test showed Ross with a blood-alcohol level of 0.20 percent, more than twice Arizona's legal limit of 0.08, police said.
