To all forum members both near and far..Steven just posted that he reached his fund raising goal for the 'Aid Ride'..let me be the first to thank him for this heroic effort. It is an undertaking that only a few could achieve..Best to you Steven!!

The AIDS Ride is one form of fundraising opportunity to obtain funds for care and research into HIV and the people living with it who need help. Congratulations to Steven and anyone else who devotes themselves to a goal such as this. There are many people each year who reach their fundraising goal through grit and determination. To say that only a few have achieved it undermines the great efforts that many have made. And it does not take a thing away from Steven's accomplishment to acknowledge the efforts of so many others.

Congratulations, Steven! It's a good cause and a great way to support it. David's video from last year showed the fun the group has. The training that goes into getting ready for this ride makes me appreciate the effort all that much more.

Congratulations Steven. Glad to see that you'll be able to join in the ride. The easy part is now done. Now to do the 545 mile ride.

So Steven is in. David is in. Do we have any other friends of the forum who have yet to reach their goal so they too can ride?

How long does the ride take? I would guess the ride would be the easy part, unless you are not in good shape...

It is by all accounts OS..an absolutely life changing experience. A move back East mid-year has kept me on the side lines, but I am supporting an ex co-worker with housing on the LA end of the run. If you should ever find the opportunity, one should jump at the chance...

Actually, it's the other way around. The fundraising is the easy part; getting your ASS out there and the training is the most challenging.

The training and preparation usually starts in the spring and last 3 months. The month preceding the Ride I was out with my bike every other day and those were long hours biking. There's a misconception that if you're in a good shape you can just hop on the bike and ride 545 miles in 7 days. You gonna suffer and by day 3 you'll be totally spent. Training and preparation are paramount.

Finally, I'd like to acknowledge that last year five other members from this Board have participated in this great cause which is the AIDS/LifeCycle - David/SF, Andrew Dragon, Lance, Tony Bishop and Victor Racek.

Hopefully there will be more joining in this year.

Again, thanks for what you are doing Steven. I've already donated to you and David. If you know of others (I do know that Lance Navarro is registered and I will contribute to his ride as well) from the forum who are riding, please have them post so we can also support their ride as well. If they are doing it under their real name and rather not have that posted here, have them PM me (or call me, you have my number) so I can support their ride as well.

Again, good luck to our riders.

Anyone else enjoying this exercise vicariously? From left hip replacement that went completely wrong, to trashed left knee [surgeon: "I don't know how you can walk on that thing." someone I've known for 35 years ...] awaiting replacement ... I wish all you athletes out there the best, and thanks for raising money for research and treatment of HIV.

[An unsolicited aside: As I understand HIV, getting a vaccine for it is similar to getting a vaccine for the common cold. Oh? You haven't heard of that vaccine? Just sayin']

No, but believe it or not, there is a diagnosis code in medical coding for a vaccine for the common cold. Just like there is a diagnosis for a vaccine for the flu, MMR, Hep A, and every other vaccine. Why in the world did they create a diagnosis code for the vaccine for the common cold? Wishful thinking, maybe???

It is very gracious of Steven to give a nod to the other guys that might be known here who are joining in the AIDS Ride. It's a lot of work and they all deserve credit. Steven has been at it for several years now and can probably help the new guys survive to the finish. I wonder how many drop out once the ride starts. Or maybe the support of everyone else keeps them going?

I agree I think the training would be the hardest part. I decided to get in better shape. from 2006 to 2009 I stopped driving purchased a 500.00 trek mountain bike and went everywhere on that bike. 3 months into it there were still hills I couldn't get up and would have too get off and push
