So I'm looking over the sale catalog that Titan Media sent to me in the MAIL (can you believe it? Is it 1989 again? Next thing you know, International Male will be sending me a catalog, too).

And I'm seeing a two-fer dvd that might be to my liking and I look at the order form.

"Shipping: $9.45 for first item, $1.00 for each item thereafter."

Wow! I guess it's been a long time since I've done this because I was surprised as hell.

That is ridiculously expensive for shipping charges for a DVD. Are you sure it wasn't the special rate for speedy delivery as opposed to the normal rate?

Titan's shipping rates are pretty high.

Postage rates in general are thru the roof. UPS imposes a "minimum" fee, and Fedex, although usually cheaper than UPS does too.

You can often purchse something on EBAY for .99, and be hit with a $15 shipping charge. High shipping costs is also the way sellers recoup money and still make it look like you are getting a "good deal"....

I double-checked.

Here are the speedier rates:

2nd day - $24 first dvd, $1 each after

Next day - $40.45 first dvd, $1 each after.

Two things:

1. FedEx - non-union, UPS - Teamster's Union...

2. Marketers understand pricing sensitivity. They will lower a sales price then make up the lost margin in the shipping costs. My company has a rate with UPS that is 30% below the UPS Published Rate. We sometimes sell things below costs, knowing that there's PROFIT in that thar shipping charge!

Before I retired, I ran a retail business which had a store and huge on-line catalog. Our shipping rates were extremely competitive on a retail level, but because of our volume our billed rates (UPS) were ridiculously low. By far, the number one profitable area at the end of the fiscal year (by margin ) was shipping.

Any company charging outrageous rates should be ashamed. I went to a UPS Store a month ago to ship a small package (standard ground) to the midwest. When he came up with the figure, I said I just wanted to have something shipped, not buy the franchise.
