For those of you who might not follow news pertaining to animal welfare issues, I thought I would share an important victory for animals.

The DOD regulation states that non-animal methods must be used whenever scientifically valid and comparable alternative are available.

The U.S. Army had been conducting monthly training exercises at Aberdeen Proving Grounds where Vervet monkeys were poisoned with a drug overdose. The overdose made the monkeys suffer violent seizures to demonstrate the effects of a nerve-agent attack, despite the fact that other military courses already use human patient simulators that have been proven to replicate the effects of nerve agent exposure on human beings. Blatant cruelty and government waste at the expense of a living creatures.

It was announced today that Aberdeen Proving Grounds, the last military installation to use animals for this training, will discontinue these experiments effective immediately. This accomplishment for animal welfare was only possible through the strength of the social movement to end the suffering of animals. Stand up for what you believe in!
