Vietnam Rounds Up Gays For 'Reprogramming'

(Hong Kong) Vietnam is routinely rounding up gays and sending them for 'reprogramming' at psychiatric centers. Officially called 'education centers' the facilities are used for people deemed a threat to the government and were used to indoctrinate thousands of South Vietnamese after the Vietnam war.

The most recent raid was on a gay sauna where 30 men were arrested for having sex.

A Ho Chi Mihn City police officer said: "Even though there were no prostitution activities in the location, such mass homosexual conduct breaches administration regulations and is harmful to social order."

"We have sent them to an education school to warn them against further similar infringements."

The officer would not say how long they will be kept at the center, but said they could receive fines.

The state-owned Thanh Nien (Young People) daily said that during weekends, hundreds of clients visit the sauna.

Although not officially outlawed, authorities in the communist-ruled country consider homosexuality a social evil.

I grieve for these sisters and brothers.

What a harsh reminder that patriarchial,

moralistic thinking is always close to

surfacing. It could happen anywhere.

That is disgusting. It's also why the work of organizations like Amnesty International is so important. Check their site http://www.amnestyusa.org/home.html and in the search engine, type in "gay" or "homosexual" and you can read about the discrimination & imprisonment they are working to end (or have succeeded in ending) around the world & right here in the U.S.
