Weekend - new gay movie from UK

The Times had a nice review of this last week. I finally caught up with it this evening.

It struck me as a bit amateurish at times, and the typical problem with the soundtrack on independent Brit films. Between the actors' murmuring and the accents, following the dialogue can be a bit tough.

But the story itself is touching - two gay men, 20 somethings, normal guys, not super hot but OK to look at - meet in a bar on a Friday night and end up spending much of the weekend together, much of it in bed. It verges on the pornographic in one sex scene, but the sex isn't the main point - it's seeing how a relationship might begin out of a pick-up. The young actors do a fine job with it, although I thought the cutest was the third-billed guy, the straight best friend of the lead, who has only two brief appearances at the beginning and toward the end.

In Manhattan it's playing at IFC Center (6th Avenue near W. 4th St.), heart of Greenwich Village, so you know what the audience will be like. Plenty of men in the audience at the show I attended could just as well have been up on the screen.
