My life age 3: eat, nap, color, learn to read and count, play with my dog , play with other kids in sandbox. (Shades of Little Miss Sunshine ???)

A parenting group has opened fire on TLC’s Toddlers & Tiaras, criticizing the series for showing a 3-year-old dressed as Julia Roberts’ prostitute character from Pretty Woman. The child beauty pageant reality hit’s new promo (below) includes a scene of the girl, named Paisley, wearing a variation on Roberts’ hooker garb.

“We have a serious problem when The Learning Channel* features a toddler, who probably hasn’t even learned to read, dressed as a prostitute showing off her sexy strut,” says Melissa Henson, director of communications and public education for the PTC: “There’s no question, TV executives are complicit in robbing these small kids of their childhood. For years we’ve seen adult sexuality being inappropriately and aggressively foisted on innocent young children, but children today are being sexualized at younger and younger ages.”

I tried to imagine the doll without the connection to the film. It's still bad. IMO, no matter how you cut it the costume is the wrong message to send to children.

Do you honestly think these young kids know the implications of their costumes? I just think the kids feel they are playing dressup and having fun...

Its the parents motivations that are disturbing, but they are just trying to win money in these economically hindered times, and are taking a "you do what ya gotta do" approach..... I suppose we need to walk in their shoes before judging them ? Its often the reactions to a situation that MAKE the situation much worse than it really is.

For several years I would always unfortunately be staying at a large hotel in NYC when the IMTA (International Modeling and Talent Association) would be having there talent contests... and the kids and their parents had to be seen to be believed. I got in the elevator once with what looked like a twenty something year old woman... When I tried to engage her in conversation and after taking a closer look it was apparent that she was a 14 year old budding bimbo! It was crazy to see little kids and other contestants up to about age 20 looking way beyond their chronological ages!

I now stay away from that property during that time frame... of course once I did hit the jackpot... a young male bodybuilders Speedo contest... one guy was in a glitzy gold banana hammock... that almost made the total experience somewhat worthwhile... still it probably involved mostly jailbait... so!

The kids may not understand it at 3, but in a few more years, they will. And the parents aren't likely to stop this, if they have ANY success.

Too easy. No reply.

Really Captain, stalking & making lite of my posts again??

Would you take your ginger haired 3 y/o son, dress him in a cheap leather harness, and parade him around like he was going to the Folsom Street Fair??

This is child pornography / exploitation at its worst pleasing only the sicko parents and the pedophiles...

As per usual, gloats, you don't get it. The reference was to you being disturbed, not the linked material. Interesting to be called a stalker from a person who freely bandies about illegal references to such as KMEM-TV.

Best regards,

JJ, even if the kids don't understand the full import of what they are engaging in at the time ("dress-up"), this still seems to me to be an inappropriate experience in and of itself for children. They don't need to get it - they shouldn't even experience it in my opinion. And believe me, I am no blue-nose. But childhood should be reserved for childhood experiences. The adults should understand what is really going on here and be ashamed for what they are doing. Times are tough, yes, but that does not give a parent the right to engineer an inappropriate experience for their child in the name of winning money. Get a job and maybe some ethics.

I dont have children, and never wanted any, so perhaps I am not the best judge here, and not qualified to even have an opinion. My feeling in general is that if the child is NOT being forced to do something they dont want to do, and is enjoying the experience, then no harm is really being done. Of course we cant know this for a fact until several years down the road, but there are much WORSE things that kids are exposed to and endure, and somehow they turn out OK.... It really has more to do with strenght of character and a loving enviornment. Its really a crap shoot, and like I say, perhaps I am NOT qualified to speak on this issue....
