MUSEUM OF SEX IN NYC, NOW OPEN

Located on the corner of 5th Ave. and 27th Street, the "MUSEUM OF SEX" is now open to the public...Although the building is still under-going renovations, the museum has the potential of becoming a must stop on any visit to the City. The well orgaznied displays depict the development of the "sex trade" in NYC. It shows how the City "transformed sex in America"...Starting with pictures, videos and audios of the early "BROTHELS and MADAMS", this self guided tour takes you through a history of "prostitution, burlesque, birth control, obscenity, fetish, and more".

 

Some of the more explicit/erotic displays are on the "consequences of sexually transmitted diseases" and the "Golden Age of Porn"...Most informative would have to be the "history of condom" exhibit and "outing sexuality"...Fond memories were found in the exhibits on bath houses, sex parties, gay art and comics, gay publications ("Gay Activist", "NY Mattachine", "The Bath Club", "The Ladder", and "One") and the "HOOTCHY-KOOTCHY"(belly dancing) display.

 

The Museum is a collection of paintings, prints, newspaper articles, cartoons, books, letters, court/police documents, maps, audio/video/film accounts, and visual aids to help you better appreciate the history of this trade.

 

Admission is $17 which includes a hand held recorder to listen to stories/information on different displays. The self guided tour takes about and 1 1/2 hours. More information can be found at http://www.museumofsex.com
