snip snip - - but in regard to escorts obtained from agencies, if the guy who is sent to you is NOT the one you've requested-- one is NOT obligated to accept second/third choice that's sent by n agency.

I know I would definitely NOT go with someone who I did not request. I've hired via agencies in both Rio and Sao Paulo and have only received who I requested. All of my experiences have been positive, too, in regard to the preceding!

I am pleased that you had no problem with hiring garotos from the internet agencies while in Brazil.

However, most Americans (and other tourists) that visit Brazil do not speak Portuguese.

If a tourist meets a garoto in a sauna, there is a person-to-person meeting. Despite the inability to speak the language of each other, a certain chemistry begins and a transaction is consummated if both parties agree.

If a problem arises between a tourist and a garoto while in a sauna, a tourist can usually find assistance from others in the sauna. Therefore, the sauna environment is reasonably safe.

However, if a tourist goes shopping for a garoto from an internet photo advertisement and places an order, the selected garoto generally goes to the hotel or other place where a tourist stays.

If the garoto shows up and is not the same person in the photo or is not a reasonable likeness to the photos, or, if the tourist was misled by over flattering photos of the garoto, how can the non Portuguese speaking tourist meaningfully complain? Or, how can the tourist remove himself from this potentially dangerous situation?

Once the garoto is in a tourist’s room, there is no safety of a crowded sauna.

Could a tourist ask a garoto to wait in the room or reception area of a hotel (embarrassing) while the tourist telephones the agency to lodge a complaint because of displeasure with what was sent? This would not be possible to ask because the tourist does not know the language and the garoto does not know English.

If the agency cannot readily be reached, then what does a tourist do, all the while not understanding the language being spoken by the garoto who has come to the tourists’ room expecting to make money?

On the other hand, if a garoto is hired based on an independent advertisement, there is usually less of a problem particularly if the tourist asks a Portuguese speaking friend to arrange the encounter.

Independent garoto advertisers are often known to other tourists. These garotos have a reputation to preserve. Therefore, these independent garoto advertisements carry less risk than hiring from an agency.

The obvious downside to hiring through an agency or from an independent advertisement is that such a method of hiring takes away the charm and conviviality that are found in a sauna environment. There is no opportunity to get to “know” a little of the garoto before making a commitment.

As a result of the fairly recent major decline in the quality and quantity of available garotos in the saunas, one might consider renting from the internet, although I would never recommend this potentially dangerous thing to anyone.

To new travelers to Brazil, who do not speak Portuguese, avoid hiring from the internet unless you have a friend or someone nearby who could come to your assistance if something went wrong.
