When people talk about meeting someone on AOL, what does this mean? Do you need to have AOL as an internet provider? Do you need AOL instant messenger? If you do not have aol as your provider or even if you do where do you go to see and meet the boys who charge? I always see people saying, I met him on AOL and for the life of me I cannot figure out what that means. Internet neophyte. blu

Yes you have to be on AOL. There are chatrooms on AOL, in a section called Town Square which can be started by anyone. Names like bodywork4menNYC, M4MnycNow and/or variants of the above, but the message is clear. I think it's 23 people can be in a room at a time, but even if you can't get in, you can see who is in the room, look up their profile to see if it interests you, and IM them. Sometimes comes in handy, but you really need to be careful with a lot of these guys.

You don't have to use them as your ISP, but you do need an account with them. You can set up an account where you "bring your own ISP" (I think that's the actual name AOL uses for this type of account). It was $9.95/month but it recently went up to $11.95, I think.

I agree that you do need to be careful picking up guys that way. Friends of mine swear by it. Often the guys there are also reviewed on this site, so try to watch for them and check out their reviews before making a date.

More like $15.00 per month.

The 50% increase in rates when they don't provide me with any service except access to their pages is why I dropped them.

From what I can see, AOL is a waste of time. If you are looking for scorts on-line, I can't think of a more labor-intensive way to go about it. I have never heard a convincing explanation of the thrill involved. Many of these guys in the chat rooms are also either in Agencies or on Rentboy in a much more transparent manner, and I don't see a price discount on AOL. I would like to hear from the AOL advocates why they bother.

I've explained at length, any number of times before, why I've found AOL to be a useful tool for me and why it works for me. As a 30-year+ plus professional user of computers, I feel qualified to offer a more-than-casual opinion.

But I'm tired of explaining and tired of the attitude that people who use AOL belong to some sort of subspecies of life.

It's just a tool. If you don't like it, don't use it.

If anyone wants to do a search, they'll find plenty posted on this topic before.

I don't denigtrate anyone for using it. I just don't understand it. I have read all the past threads on this, but I never found an explanation that made sense to me. That is why I signed up to see for myself. When I did, I still could not figure out the thrill. C'est la vie, I guess!
