Seattle, WA — This time of the year is special for many religions and for me it's the holiday called "Yule", the celebration of the Winter Solstice. The shortest day of the year, the Solstice marks the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year. It's a time for reflection and a time planning for the New Year.

However this year its even a bit more special. For the first time in 456 years the Winter Solstice coincides with a total lunar eclipse. The Gazette did an article on the significance for those of a more religious bent.

According to Californiality.com that night 456 years ago is historically remembered as a night of lunacy and insanity, the 1554 total eclipse was felt so strongly over such a long night that people around the world rejoiced when the sun finally rose.

The eclipse starts at 9:30pm PST with the total eclipse at about 12:17am PST.

It was spectacular, until the clouds obscured the view as the moon was returning. It took longer than I thought. I can see why ancient societies were frightened. I would have sacrificed a virgin but couldn't find one.

Last night in Atlanta, the TV weathermen were gushing about the eclipse and explaining the astronomy, and they were so proud of themselves and their knowledge, blah, blah, blah. Well, they forgot their job is meteorology. None of the asswipes predicted the CLOUD cover during the night. Needless to say, I was pissed when I rose during the night expecting to enjoy the show in the skies only to see waves of low-level clouds. I hope others were able to appreciate the view.
