More sites from lurkers

Like most of you, I suppose, I get occasional emails from guys who visit M4M but don't post, usually just wanting to say hello. They're fun to receive.

After I created the list of Web sites, I got what I considered to be a surprising number of comments by email. Some of these emails included web sites that the authors liked. I liked some of them, too, and I figured I'd share them with everyone else.

ps: Alan, last night I went to see Carmen on the Boston Common and then out drinking and partying (too much; I have a headache!) with friends. Don't worry: I did NOT spend all night researching these sites. ;-)

"TuDocs -- The Ultimate Directory of Cooking Sites". I'm not sure I'd call this the "ultimate directory" of cooking sites, but it's quite good and has links a lot of interesting food and cooking sites that I'd never heard of before.

"The Magazine Boy" A very good directory of magazines on the Web, organized by subject, with count of how many magazines are in each subject category. Very easy to use. They claim to index over 1,500 magazines. I didn't count.

"111 Travel Directory: Directory of Bed and Breakfasts, Hotels, Lodging, Travel Resources" Seems very easy to use and well-organized. It's organization suggests interesting trips or side-tracks that one might take. Although it seems mainly oriented toward Bed-and-Breakfasts, it has links to other travel lists as well as inns and vacation rentals.

"Travel.Org - Travel Directory" Another travel site, quite comprehensive, listing other information besides simply ticket-related info. Organized by geographic regions and attempts to cover the whole world.

http://www.travel.org/

"DMOZ Open Directory Project" What seems like an incredibly comprehensive directory of computer-related sites, claiming to index 131,639 sites. Organized as hyperlinks, by category. Extremely easy to use. I haven't even begun to delve into this. It looks like it would be useful for anyone in the business or with an interest in computers.

"Wierd, Wacky and Oddball Web Sites" This is a UK-based site listing what you'd expect: wierd, wacky and oddball sites. Everything from "Crazy Bitch" (messy split-ups) to "The Ad Graveyard" (Tasteless and bizarre ads that never quite made it) to "Crop Circles" (how do they get there) to Graf Cafe (worldwide graffiti) to "The Museum of Hoaxes" (All the famous hoaxes are here) to ...

"Gardening Places.com" Another directory, more comprehensive than I expected. Seems to have just about everything possible for gardening. Arranged by subject, very easy to navigate.

"GardenWeb - The Internet's Garden Community" Just what it sounds like, indexing garden forums (on MANY, MANY topics!), a plant database, a garden bazaar, a garden exchange, a glossary of botantical terms, gardening tips, gardening calendars, etc.

"Foreign Languages for Travelers" This is a cool site. You can pick a language you're interested in learning, from a list of over 100 languages. You're then given a list of categories to choose from (Basic Words, Numbers, Shopping and Dining, Travel, Directions, Places, Time and Dates). Selecting one of those will take you to a list of words with translations. Clicking on a word will allow you to hear someone saying the word -- in a loop, which I like because if you're like me, you don't get the sound the fist time and want to hear it several times. A definite bookmark for this one for anyone traveling to other countries.

"Travlang's Translating Dictionaries" Another language site, indexing a fair number of online dictionaries, offering translations in both directions between a variety of languages. For example, the Danish section can translate to and from Danish to English, German, Dutch and Swedish.

"Online Sports Directory" Just what it sounds like, a directory of sports products and services, organized by just about any sport you can think of. It's really a shopping site, but will appeal to those who like to read about products and gadgets for their favorite sport.

"AskOxford: Better Writing" A site chock full of suggestions, tips and information about writing better. Includes things like "Classic Errors and Helpful Hints", "One Step Ahead" and "Plain English", as well as an index of related reference materials. Invaluable to anyone who wants to improve their writing. AskOxford has other linked, language-related sites: "Ask the Experts", "Better Writing", "World of Words", "Games", "Global English" and "Foreign Languages" make up the list. I actually quite like this site.

"DMOS OPEN DIRECTORY PROJECT - Personal Finance" Another DMOZ directory, this one for personal fianance. Not nearly as big as the computer directory, but still indexing a lot of material in easy-to-navigate groups.

http://dmoz.org/Home/Personal_Finance/

"Gay Directory and Searchable Guide by Gayscape" The name says it all. Links by product, topic , service and geographic area (not just the US; the whole world). Claims to index over 68,000 sites. I believe it. Very easy to use.
