I have been a drooling fan of James Franco's talent ever since I first saw him in a not so great film called "City by the Sea" back in 2002. He played the strung-out drug addict son of Robert DeNiro - a homicide cop in the film. I have also of late become enamored by his defiance to define himself as one thing or another. YAY!

Since then, he has gone on to star in many other projects, some just to mention are Spider-man, Fools Gold, Annapolis, and most recently, guest appearances on General Hospital. The latter I have not seen but I'm sure they were yummy with all that kind of sexual-drama during day-time teevee.

James Franco's latest film, "127 hours" looks like his best work yet and I can't wait to see it. From what critics are already saying, this is not only a great film - but a great performance by Franco himself.

James Franco plays the true life character of Aron Ralston, whom you may recall from his real-life story a number of years ago ended up self-amputating his right arm after being trapped alone in a Utah canyon for five days.

Here is a trailer for the film. Is anyone else here a huge James Franco fan?

I think he was very good in Eat, Pray, and Love.

I saw "127 Hours" yesterday. It is a masterpiece of film-making by Danny Boyle, and an all-star performance by Franco in the leading role of Aron Ralston. You might think a film about a guy trapped in a crevice in the wilderness for 127 hours would be boringly static, but this isn't. There is lots of camera movement, lots of incidents, and Franco just acts up a storm. Some in the audience averted their eyes when he started hacking away at his forearm with a dull knife.... The S&M crowd should groove on it, I guess. But I found the entire thing enthralling. See it on a big screen, if possible, because the huge vistas of Utah wilderness are breathtaking. By the way, one of my favorite Franco performances is from "Tristan and Isault" - a non-musical dramatic version of the legend upon which Wagner based his opera. Franco is a scrumptious Tristan, especially in the early scene when he lies shirtless in the cavern being attended to by Isault. He was in top fighting trim for that role. And at a maximum of cuteness.

How gory is the amputation scene? I really want to see this movie, but I'm not sure I can take it.

Whoa! what? Appreciate the film brother, but never castrate the S&M community as ever being so shallow and misunderstood as one that would ever take pleasure in this point of the film.

What the fuck is wrong with YOU?

just saw it today.....the amputation scene is fairly graphic and lasts a few minutes...sounds of bones breaking, lots of blood, skin being punctured, and a nerve being cut is especially graphic (good sound in the nerve-cutting scene).....have reliably heard that people have fainted or thrown up during this scene.....

a bit Hollywood-ed up in parts.....however, I'm very familiar with hiking in so. Utah and was impressed with some realistic scenes.....cool music.....sad in parts....

the most we see of Franco is him walking thru a room with a towel around his waist after a shower...a few other short shirtless scenes.....he's always scruffy-looking in almost all the scenes.....

I don't mean to stereotype the S&M scene. I'm actually in to it a bit myself - have been tied up and abused at NY Bondage Club, etc., and like to fantasize bondage and other stuff. But that was a throw-away line. There are guys into cutting, scarring, etc., but that scene is about desperation, of course.

Can't handle it!

I don't think I could handle that. I handle most graphic violence ok - EXCEPT for cutting and/or the display of internal organs. For some reason, that pushes me over the edge - even if it isn't show in graphic detail, the strong suggestion is sometimes enough.
