Recently in my old hood in Seattle over a 100 people a dew being friends have had their bank accounts hacked using their cards at merchants. Saturday I found out that mine also has been hacked out here un Chicago. Watch your statements and check online like there's no tomorrow on what is clearing! I was lucky that they only gotvaway with just under $300 and was caught quickly by my bank.

At these debit cards, I assume? Any idea how it was done? Did they swipe your card twice? Or write down the info for use?

The feaud that happened to my friends in Seattle is an odd one cause it is mainly in my old hood. That one has effected about 100 people and two businesses from what I understand are being looked at. As for me I dont know where they got my card number. Im not sure how the banks figure something fishy is going on but Im glad they caught it cause it probably would have been another week or two before I would have. Ive had my card scammed before and I should have learned to watch whats clearing via online banking more carefully. So guys watch your statements closy esp with rhe holiday season coming up.

I never hand my debit card to anyone else; I swipe it myself. If a card must be passed to someone else (restaurant, etc.), it's always a credit card. While nothing is foolproof these days as thieves become more savvy, this seems to be my best protection against something untoward happening with my finances.

I think you are living with a false sence of security. Regardless if the card is a debit or a credit card, a card with cash on it is good regardless of it being debit or credit. Boobers (the bf) and I were talking about this and are thinking that it is odd that I just got hit shortly after some of our friends back in out old hood got hit. We are thinking that in this situation the bad guys have been collecting card numbers for quite some time and are finally putting them to use. Here is the link to the story http://www.capitolhillseattle.com/2010/11/05/revised-victim-totals-in-capitol-hill-fraud-reports-as-big-media-catches-on The way they hit me was they made a $7 charge on my card to see if the card was good and then reversed the charge and then went shopping at Toys R Us and Target.

It doesn't matter whether you swipe the card or someone else does. The fraudsters often hack into the credit card terminal, grab the mag stripe data, and clone the card.
